Dear ASCLD Colleagues,
NIST and Noblis initiated the Bullet Black Box Study just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was going well until the world got flipped upside down. NIST/Noblis recognizes that those labs who volunteered to participate in the study, and labs considering volunteering, became burdened with a reduction of examination time in the laboratory as well as an increase in firearms related submissions. Test activity from participants dropped.
NIST and Noblis have extended the test period to late 2021 and respectfully request laboratories to participate so they may generate more data and improve the study. Please see the attachment for more information and help us strengthen forensic science.
Have a terrific week!
Be well,
Erin

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has published DNA Mixture Interpretation: A Scientific Foundation Review. This draft report, which will be open for public comment for 60 days before being published in final form, reviews the methods that forensic laboratories use to interpret evidence containing a mixture of DNA from two or more people. The review has found that there is not enough publicly available data to independently assess the reliability of these methods.
