NFL Picks by TravyFootball

Week 10

Things are really starting to heat up as we move into the back half of the season. A few teams are separating themselves from the pack, while others are hanging on for dear life. Injuries, trades, and upsets are shaking up the standings every week, and it’s making for some wild Sundays. I’ve got a few matchups circled that could have major playoff implications — and maybe even a surprise or two. Check out my Week 10 picks here.

A Snapshot in Time by Bob Gates

On four occasions, the Downs has raced into November (1979, 1981, 1987, and 1991). Over the next four weeks, we’ll take a trip back in time and revisit those November winner’s circle shots.

First up is Arctic Mist from November 1, 1979. Lots of snow here as owner/trainer Harry Gumprich finds his way to the charmed circle in the first race of the night. It was a short night, however, as the races were called after race three when the jocks informed track management that the track was unsafe. (Gerry Hart photo)

Noel’s Weekend Winners: Value Plays Saturday at the Big A

Aqueduct is ready to roll this Saturday with an excellent 10-race card that includes three graded stakes. Handicapper Noel Michaels picks the winners, exactas, and trifectas in a pair of graded stakes for 3-year-olds including the Hill Prince Stakes (G3) on the grass and the Mother Goose Stakes (G2) for fillies on the dirt.

Woodbine Saturday: Maple Leaf and Bessarabian Previews

Fillies and mares are in the spotlight this Saturday at Woodbine, with the Mark Casse barn eyeing more Grade 3 success with Blitz and Dancing N Dixie in the $150,000 Maple Leaf Stakes (G3), while Shotgun Wedding and Girl of My Dreams will chase glory in the $150,000 Bessarabian (G3). Both are good races with competitive fields. If you can pick the right lady, you'll get your price.

Breeders' Cup Raises as Many Questions as Answers

Since the Breeders' Cup races are billed as championship contests, clarity should be expected in the results. But this year, with so many brief campaigns at the top of the game, it looks as if Eclipse Award voters will be asked to make some giant leaps over tradition.

A few of the champions will be easy to determine. Others, not so much.

The Best of Bob

This week, we once again present the special “War Horse” blog story that Bob shared on November 7, 2018. In this piece, he explores the role of the horse in the Great War and shares his special “War Horse” Remembrance Day tribute, written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I — “the war to end all wars.” Click here for Horses of the Great War. Lest we forget.
