An update from NMDP on HLA Testing
|
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the NMDP offered free intermediate resolution (IR) HLA typing for related donors as an interim COVID-19 relief measure. Starting Jan. 1, 2022, the $235 per-sample fee will be reinstated when the transplant center sends the sample to the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP)/Be The Match® contracted laboratory for IR related donor HLA typing. There will continue to be no charge from the NMDP/Be The Match for buccal swab kit creation, shipping, and delivery to the transplant center lab for typing.
In the event a transplant center cannot be reimbursed for IR-related donor typing, you can submit a request for reimbursement through the Patient Financial Assistance Portal if the transplant is going to be facilitated by the NMDP/Be The Match. If you need additional support with reimbursement, please contact your Clinical Operations Partner or Case Manager.
Please note that until further notice, the Related Donor Services workup and collection fee for related donors living in the U.S. or Mexico remains $15,000 regardless of contractual status. Access the request forms and additional information on the Related Donor Services webpage.

The WMDA Search & Match Service comprises nearly 40 million donors. Despite recent advances in HLA typing, a cohort of donors of whom absent loci pose a barrier to identify them as a compatible donor for patients in need of a transplant. For these cases knowledge of donor and recipient ancestry can enhance potential matching algorithms. The RUN project group has identified improvements in the reporting and mapping of ehtnicity. To avoid inconsistencies and ensure uniform mapping, they propose the following recommendation (click on the link below). Let us know in case you have comments or questions on these recommendations.
