Students
Yesterday we received notification that in coordination with advice from public health officials all campus events would be canceled from then through, at minimum, April 30, 2020. This will include all ASI events and programs, but so far will not include the services we normally provide in the University Student Union, ASI Recycling Center, Isabel Patterson Child Development Center and the Student Recreation & Wellness Center. This will also require us to cancel planning for the ASI Big Event for this semester as well as any other large-scale programming that was in the works.
I must admit, I too am saddened that so many of our greatest events, programs and traditions must pause - but it is the absolute right thing to do.
As a student leader at the Beach, I must applaud the decision to cancel events by the university.
Our most important priority should always be the health and safety of our student body.
Across the country all institutions, from the state and federal government to Disneyland and the NBA, are making similar tough decisions and working to practice enhanced social distancing by canceling similar types of events.
As your student body president and ASI CEO, I will be working with our events and communications team over the next week to see if there are any ways we can provide on-line opportunities for workshops, fun activities and other alternative ways to keep our student body connected. Know that ASI is here to listen and advocate on your behalf. Should you have any ideas, please feel free to email them to us at
asi-studentgovernment@csulb.edu
. For clarity regarding your classes, please begin by messaging your professor(s) and/or department chairs directly. However, if you are unable to find the information you are looking for, our Dean of Students Dr. Piya Bose has offered her email at
studentdean@csulb.edu
. Please feel free to message her and her team if you need additional information.
Also, remember to stay connected to us through social media @CSULBASI on all channels and @CSULBASIGOV on Facebook and Twitter for student government related updates. Our team will continue to share university related content as it is released. That said, for the most up-to-date information regarding CSULB's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, visit the campus central web page at
www.csulb.edu/covid-19
. And just to reiterate, CSULB currently has no confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus.
Thank you for your time and attention to this message. Let's stick together during this trying time and support one another to the best of our abilities. Remember to practice kindness more than usual and to check in with your friends and family frequently, as everyone is experiencing this global situation differently. Let's stay a positive team and as always, Go Beach!
Sincerely,
Lizbeth Velasquez
