Student Spotlight

Carly Lesko
ASID CT Student Representative to the Board

Interior Design has always been a passion of mine. Ever since I was a little girl, I had always been intrigued by buildings and other elements in design. I would doodle little houses in my notebook in elementary school every day.

I decided to pursue Interior Design because I knew that I wanted to wake up every morning and love my job. Through Interior Design I'm able to express my creativity, my drive, and my willingness to keep challenging myself every single day.

I am a Senior at University of Bridgeport, and a Chair Member on the UB Chapter of ASID. I joined the Association because I wanted to set myself up for success once I graduated college. Being able to make connections with industry professionals through ASID has helped me grow tremendously with confidence and communication. I am so excited to have been elected as Student Representative to the Board for ASID Connecticut. I am also incredibly grateful that I get to work alongside many talented Designers within the field.

Message From the President

Karen Raines Davis, ASID

I'm so excited to be the incoming President of the ASID CT and f irst I would like to thank Jody Fierz for her leadership and hard work as our past Chapter President. I feel fortunate to follow in her footsteps.

I also want to thank Maureen, our administrator and the Board of Directors for their time and effort and dedication and making this year such a success.

To me, ASID has always represented a dynamic and enthusiastic design community that supports its members and I couldn't be more honored to be a part of it.

A little bit about my background - I'm originally from the West Coast and have worked in residential and hospitality Design Firms in Los Angeles & NY. I have lived in the NW Corner of Connecticut for almost 17 years running my own firm. One of the things I like most about ASID is that I could be in Los Angeles, New York or Westport Connecticut and find an energized design community of creative minds.

I've spent time getting to know our Board of Directors over the past 2 years and we are looking forward to creating and providing content driven events in the coming year. We plan to bring more events that are some of my personal design passions and part of my west coast background - highlighting health & wellness in our design projects and the importance of sustainability in interior design.

I want to encourage you to come to events and volunteer your time and expertise.  You can  reach out to me and our Connecticut Board members and share your ideas and enthusiasm - we'd love to hear from you.

We had a very successful and festive holiday party at Lillian August on December 6 and our first CEU of the year will be on January 17th at the Tile Shop  in Norwalk, CT.

Our Student Career Night and Portfolio Review will be on February 13. Join us!

You can find our contact information on the ASID Connecticut website  www.ct.asid.org for more information and updates.

Thank you!
Karen Davis

Member Spotlight

Time flies!

In 1977, I was living in Westport with my husband Max and our two young boys. I had recently finished putting the "final touches" on my fifth home of married life.  (On a slim budget, finishing touches meant paint, wallpaper and shutters.)

One of our new neighbors visited and loved my house and asked me to find wallpaper for her kitchen. I was delighted to help out! I flipped through the Yellow Pages - remember this is 1977, pre-internet - and found The Wallpaper Source on Route 7 in Wilton CT who advertised "designer wallpapers."

The day I visited The Wallpaper Source was a very good and fortuitous day for me - it was the start of my career in Interior Design!  The manager of the store led me back to the stacks and I found a beautiful Hannet Morrow Fisher vinyl hand-screened wallpaper for my neighbor's kitchen. The manager also offered me a part time job, which I accepted immediately. I would be selling wallpaper, coordinated fabrics, making home visits to take measurements and design window treatments. It was literally baptism by fire in home design!

I quickly realized that I needed more education to deepen my credibility in the field of interior design. This led to me to seek out and acquire my design credentials:
  • NY School of Interior Design, Certificate in Interior Design - 1978
  • Professional Member of ASID CT Chapter - 1989
  • NCIDQ Certificate - 2000

Later, I went on to work at The Paper Works in Westport CT in 1979, and Anne Mullin Interiors in Greenwich in1992. In 2001, I started my own firm, LBG interior Design LLC, also in Greenwich, that continues to this day.  Most importantly through all these years, is the fact that I have been a "card-carrying," active member of the CT Chapter of ASID and was honored to be your President for the 2012 - 2013 term.

Yes. Time flies ... what a wonderful journey I continue to have as a qualified and engaged interior designer. I am so thankful for the opportunity that was presented to me in 1977 and that I was able to pursue to a professional level.  I especially want to thank the CT Chapter of ASID, Maureen Judge, our terrific administrator, and all of the creative and professional designers that have encouraged and supported me in this journey; it is your back-up that has been invaluable! I couldn't have done it without you!

With warmest regards to all,
Lynn B. Garelick, ASID, NCIDQ

ASID CT Annual Celebration September 27 2018

Thanks to our sponsors - Circa Lighting, Bender Plumbing, Kebabian's Rugs and CT Cottages & Gardens - we enjoyed a beautiful Annual Celebration at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield.

We were inspired to look at color in a very different way by our featured speaker, the renowned textile designer, Lori Weitzner, of Lori Weitzner Design Inc. Lori guided us into her world of color that is beautifully presented in her new book, "Ode to Color."  Questions and answers were moderated by D.J. Carey, Editorial Director of CTC&G.

Our thanks also go to our Industry Partners who contributed to the event - DEANE, Torrco and artist  Katie Re Scheidt. And to  Tim LaBant of LaBant Catering & Events for truly delicious food beautifully presented.
