FM in 2026: UK building maintenance group cites pressures of budget constraints, decreases

2025 highlighted how firmly regulatory change has taken hold across the facilities management sector. The Fire Safety Act 2021, the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 continued to redefine responsibilities, sharpen accountability and raise expectations around building safety and compliance in the UK. For facilities management professionals, these regulations have moved from implementation to enforcement, setting a clearer baseline that will shape priorities, investment and operational decision-making as the industry looks ahead to 2026.

Paul Bullard, Product and Professional Services Director at SFG20, the UK industry standard for building maintenance, has shared insights regarding how the FM industry will continue to evolve in 2026 and the changes he believes will be particularly impactful for those working in the industry.

Facilities management enters 2026 under sustained financial pressure. The SFG20 State of Facilities Management Report 2025 revealed that 75% of facility managers identified budget constraints as their biggest challenge in 2025, and 40% reported a budget decrease between 2024 and 2025.

State of Facilities Management 2026, from MRI Software / CoreNet Global

FM teams face aging buildings, tightening budgets, and rising expectations for efficiency, sustainability, and data-driven decision making. Yet the FM function remains one of the most operationally intense — and too often, one of the most resource-constrained — disciplines in real estate.

What does this mean for FM? Modernization is no longer aspirational. It’s essential.

The State of Facilities Management – 2026, developed by MRI Software and CoreNet Global, captures the voices of FM leaders and practitioners across industries, regions, and organizational sizes. Their responses reveal a profession that deeply understands what must be done, but struggles to bridge the gap between aspiration and execution.

USGBC aligns LEED v5 to promote use of sustainable wood

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced a determination on wood certification systems in the LEED v5 green building rating system in alignment with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), the Forest Stewardship Council-US (FSC-US), and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). This includes the recognition of major sustainable wood standards in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), marking a significant advancement in promoting the use of sustainably sourced wood and spurring demand for more certified wood products worldwide.

While each of the recognized wood certification programs has differences in its approach and requirements, USGBC determined that all the chain-of-custody standards offer solid protection against deforestation and promote sustainable forestry.

Wood products can contribute to achieving up to 22 points in LEED v5 for Building Design and Construction (BD+C) projects and up to 30 points in LEED v5 for Interior Design and Construction (ID+C).

Student housing satisfaction dropped in 2025. Learn how top colleges are making a digital shift to meet rising expectations, in this StarRez report

StarRez, a global provider of on- and off-campus student housing software, has released a new report revealing what is changing in today’s college housing landscape, and providing an essential guide to the trends, data and strategies shaping the future of the resident experience. The 2025 State of the Student Housing Industry Report revealed a critical paradox: while enrollment rebounded, resident satisfaction dropped nearly 7% from 2024.

This disconnect signals that operational models of the past aren’t withstanding the fast-shifting expectations of the modern student experience, asserts the report. Rising expectations from students, stretched staff capacity, and expanding off-campus strategies are reshaping how institutions deliver housing. The report uncovers what’s changing, why it matters, and how the most forward-thinking college and university teams are adapting.

Position postings are up on Job Board following January’s uptick

The January job surge surprised government officials, economists, employers and employees alike. While it was released five days later than usual due to the partial government shutdown, it was worth the wait. Stabilizing the job market and recording a slightly lower unemployment rate inspires companies to consider filling positions where current employees are stretched and doing more than their share.

The FMLink Career Center is showing over 1,500 opportunities. The McMorrow Reports + FMLink team has selected a few hot positions from the FMLink Job Board, presented here:
