The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced it will reduce the amount of almost every Schedule II opiate and opioid medication that may be manufactured in the United States in 2017.

Five Defendants Face Federal Charges in Pain Management Clinic Kickback Scheme

Baltimore, Maryland - A federal grand jury indicted five defendants on charges arising from a scheme whereby physicians and administrative personnel associated with a Maryland pain management practice agreed to refer urine specimens to a testing lab for evaluation in return for $1.37 million in kickbacks:

Sandeep Sherlekar, age 51, of Germantown, Maryland,
Atif Babar Malik, age 46, of Germantown,
Muhammad Ahmad Khan, age 43, of Pakistan,
Mubtagha Shah Syed, age 49, of Jersey City, New Jersey, and
Konstantin Bas, age 40, of Brooklyn, New York.

United States Settles False Claims Act Allegations Against Coastal Spine And Pain For $7.4 Million

Jacksonville, FL - United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announces today that Physicians Group Services, P.A., doing business as Coastal Spine and Pain ("Coastal"), has agreed to pay $7.4 million to the government to resolve allegations that Coastal violated the False Claims Act by performing medically unnecessary drug screening procedures.

Local Pain Doctor Named In A 114 Count Indictment; Accused Of Illegally Issuing Hundreds Of Thousands Of Prescriptions For Controlled Substances

BUFFALO, N.Y.-U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. announced today that a federal grand jury has returned a 114 count indictment charging Dr. Eugene Gosy, 55, of Clarence, NY, with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, unlawful distribution of narcotics, conspiracy to commit health care fraud, and health care fraud. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years, a $1,000,000 fine or both.

MACRA flexibility changes draw praise, but providers must move forward

Industry trade groups and experts are voicing approval of the announcement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that it would allow providers to choose the pace at which they comply with the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA).

The American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) has developed certification programs that recognize accepted levels of knowledge and expertise in the interventional pain management profession, with the goal of improved patient care. Hundreds of qualified physicians have made the commitment to become ABIPP certified. ABIPP is recognized in 11 states. Ten states have no statutes governing specialty boards. Approval is pending in remaining states.

Either with ABMS pain medicine board certification or ABMS primary certification only

ASIPP® Abstracts Submission for 2017 Annual Meeting OPEN
  
Registration will be open for Abstract Submissions is now available.
  
The American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians will hold its 19th Annual Meeting April 20-22 in Las Vegas at Caesar's Palace.
  
This year, we will be making significant changes to the Abstract and Poster Sessions. Submissions will be in two categories: Resident/Fellow and Physician.  Selected posters will be on display forall meeting participants during all breaks and meal times.
  
The Abstract Committee will select the top 25 for publication in Pain Physician and of those 10 will be selected for Abstract presentation and judging during the Annual Meeting. The top 3 will receive cash prizes.

Opioid epidemic speaks to need for multi-tiered approach to pain management, Sparrow officials say

  Reports of skyrocketing use of opioids - including cases involving famous celebrities - are evidence that treatment of pain needs to involve a multi-pronged approach that includes psychological treatment and physical therapy and medical management with non-opioid medications or interventional treatments, according to experts at the Sparrow Pain Management Center.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced that the manufacturing of almost every Schedule II opiate and opioid medication will be reduced by ≥25% in 2017. The Final Order has been published in the Federal Register.

Bill Clinton criticized President Barack Obama's signature policy reform Monday while on the stump for his wife, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, calling Obamacare "the craziest thing in the world." But he attempted to temper his criticism at a Tuesday rally.
