New research shows patient fears will limit the return to surgery
As the coronavirus pandemic began to spread, most hospitals stopped doing elective surgeries to create capacity for the surge of infected patients.

Now, as most states begin to reopen businesses, over 90% of hospitals have restarted these surgeries, and those that haven’t will do so within weeks.

COVID-19: 'Nowhere Near the
End of the Mitigation Phase'
Former CDC head warns senators that pandemic is not in the past yet

This is not "the pandemic of a century" but "a harbinger of things to come," a former CDC director told members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee during a hearing Tuesday.

The warning from Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH, now executive vice president and chief patient officer for Merck, underscored the need for a "health security agenda," comprising both sustained leadership and funding, as well as clear communication and coordination, she said.

Sleep Predicts Migraine Recurrence
Sleep quality may identify patients at risk of developing
chronic migraine

Sleep quality at a single time point was tied to headaches occurring over the next 6 weeks among people with episodic migraine, a prospective study presented at the American Headache Society annual meeting showed.

Baseline poor sleep quality in episodic migraine patients was associated with a 22% higher rate of headache recurrence on each day over the following 6 weeks, reported Angeliki Vgontzas, MD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and co-authors.

Study is first to identify potential therapeutic targets for COVID-19

A team from Lawson Health Research Institute and Western University are the first in the world to profile the body's immune response to COVID-19. By studying blood samples from critically ill patients at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), the research team identified a unique pattern of six molecules that could be used as therapeutic targets to treat the virus. The study is published this week in Critical Care Explorations.

Since the pandemic's start there have been reports that the immune system can overreact to the virus and cause a cytokine storm - elevated levels of inflammatory molecules that damage healthy cells.

COVID-19 Antibody Tests:
Reply Hazy, Try Again
Six months into a global outbreak, data quality remains a problem
COVID-19 antibody tests -- at least, those on the market through April -- had a window for accuracy of only a few weeks after symptom onset, and little reliable data beyond that point, a Cochrane review found.

In a review of 54 available studies through the end of April, mostly from China, the accuracy of pooled results for combination immunoglobulin (Ig)G/IgM tests was 91.4% (95% CI 87.0-96.6) for 15-21 days post-symptom onset, reported Jonathan Deeks, PhD, of the University of Birmingham in the U.K., and colleagues.

‘Cries for help’: Drug overdoses are soaring during the coronavirus pandemic

Suspected overdoses nationally jumped 18 percent in March, 29 percent in April and 42 percent in May, data from ambulance teams, hospitals and police shows.

The bodies have been arriving at Anahi Ortiz’s office in frantic spurts — as many as nine overdose deaths in 36 hours. “We’ve literally run out of wheeled carts to put them on,” said Ortiz, a coroner in Columbus, Ohio.

In Roanoke County, Va., police have responded to twice as many fatal overdoses in recent months as in all of last year.

In Kentucky, which just celebrated its first decline in overdose deaths after five years of crisis, many towns are experiencing an abrupt reversal in the numbers.

A Proposed Lottery System to Allocate Scarce COVID-19 Medications Promoting Fairness and Generating Knowledge
On May 1, 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the unapproved drug remdesivir to treat hospitalized patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The authorization was based on a preliminary report from a randomized clinical trial in 1063 patients that found that remdesivir shortened the median time to recovery from 15 days to 11 days. 1 Anticipating immediate worldwide demand, the maker of remdesivir, Gilead Sciences, donated 1.5 million doses of remdesivir to countries affected by the pandemic, including the US, which received 607 000 doses (enough to treat approximately 100 000 patients).

However, the US and other countries have 2 major problems related to this drug. First, the supply of remdesivir is insufficient to treat all eligible patients, which has required hospitals to ration the drug. 2 Second, there remain major gaps in knowledge about the efficacy of remdesivir, including whether it reduces mortality and what subgroups of patients may benefit the most.
