It’s been over a year since the world started to experience the spread and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the roll-out of vaccines has brought some optimism, we know there’s still a lot of uncertainty—especially in Latin America where new waves of the pandemic are hitting. The ASL Team would like to recognize and thank the people who make this program possible despite these challenging times. We remain committed to supporting the protection of the Amazon's strategic ecosystems while promoting sustainable socioeconomic development at national, subnational, and local levels. |

This publication documents the progress and results achieved by the national and regional projects during 2020 in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. These accomplishments are a result of the strong collaboration among the national and subnational governments and executing agencies, GEF Implementing Agencies, and especially, the effort put forth by the ASL teams, their partners, and the communities we serve.

Study on International Funding for Amazon Conservation and Sustainable Management |
|
This ASL study continues the efforts by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to track and understand donor investments for Amazon conservation and seeks to advance knowledge and foster greater collaboration. It provides a starting point for donors, countries, and civil society to understand the current funding scenario, begin critical conversations on how these investments can be enhanced, and explore how donors can work together to strengthen and coordinate their efforts.

ASL receives endorsements from Global Environment Facility (GEF) CEO |

Phase 2 of the Brazil Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Project
With a budget of $19.8 million, the project will scale up the existing activities aiming to expand the area under legal protection, improve protected area management, and increase the area under restoration and sustainable management in the Brazilian Amazon.

ASL Coordination Project
The objective of the Amazon Regional technical assistance (TA) is to strengthen coordination, access to information, and capacity of national project stakeholders under the GEF-7 ASL Program. The project scales up the regional project under implementation in the first phase, expanding to a broader network of governments, agencies, partners, and communities in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Suriname. Together with other key stakeholders—including scientists, NGOs, donors and more—it also aims to strengthen the results of individual project interventions and support national, regional, and international processes and policies committed to avoiding deforestation and degradation of land and water natural resources in the Amazon, while promoting sustainable landscape management.

WEBINAR: Could a future pandemic come from the Amazon?

Pandemics have arisen roughly every 20 years over the past century and a half. The Amazon has characteristics that are common to hotspots for emerging diseases, such as high diversity of wildlife virus hosts and rising deforestation rates. Yet, the Amazon is still currently considered a low spillover area. This webinar will present the results of the report “Could a future pandemic come from the Amazon? The Science and Policy of Pandemic Prevention in the Amazon,” which suggests key actions to reduce the risk that the basin becomes a source of future pandemics.
*Spanish and Portuguese simultaneous interpretation will be available.
