A Message from the new ASMP CO President

Can you believe that it’s 2022 already? I am honored to have been chosen to serve the ASMP Colorado Chapter as President for the next two years. I definitely didn’t expect to be stepping into this role when I showed up at a brewery for a photographer meetup after joining ASMP in 2017, and was promptly invited to join the board and take over ASMP Colorado’s social media channels! But after four years on the board as Social Media Chair, Treasurer, and Vice President, here we are, and I am excited to lead the Chapter into the (hopefully) post-pandemic era!

I have immense gratitude for outgoing President, Katie Warnke, who deftly guided the Chapter from our in-person ASMP 75th Anniversary Strictly Business headliner event in early 2020, to an all virtual slate of events and workshops that kept our community engaged antd thriving through the toughest two years in most of our careers. Her leadership coupled with our bright, adaptable, creative team of board members, have steered us successfully through this unexpected rough patch.

ASMP’s core mission is to advocate, educate, and provide community for image makers — fostering thriving careers, a strong sense of professional ethics, and an unshakable belief in the power of images. I will continue to lead the Colorado Chapter in alignment with this mission, while fostering an inclusive community that values, embraces, showcases, and elevates the talents and voices of all Colorado photographers, especially those from underrepresented demographics.

My own journey with ASMP started back in Washington, DC, attending presentations and an assistants workshop when I was still in photography school. After moving to Colorado, I found the Colorado Chapter’s Meetup page, and I joined both the Chapter and the board in 2017. In that time, I have been mentored, met new people who are both friends and colleagues, elevated my photography career, and mentored others. My time with ASMP Colorado has paid for itself with jobs and connections and a wealth of knowledge.

Under my leadership, over the next two years, the board is looking to elevate the quality of our programming, and do more to add value to the photography community beyond the Front Range and Denver metro area. We are a statewide organization, and we want to recognize, be inclusive of, and provide valuable experiences and programming for photographers in every corner of this beautiful rectangle we call home. The pandemic has shown us that we can be nimble and responsive and reach communities across many miles, and we intend to take what we have learned during this challenge and use it to make the Chapter that much better.

If this sounds like an exciting path that you’d like to have a hand in creating, we are always welcoming new faces, willing hands, and open minds at any level of their careers to help build this Chapter. We would love to meet you, hear your ideas, and put them into action in the Colorado photo community. Fill out an interest form here.

I look forward to meeting, working with, and serving you all as President in 2022 and 2023.

With Gratitude,

Jen Magnuson

ASMP Member Feature: Kevin Mohatt

Kevin Mohatt is a Denver-based freelance photojournalist and regular contributor to Reuters, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Denver Post.

Growing up as a light-skinned kid with an afro in a segregated society hadn’t always been easy, but it taught him about the importance of learning how to connect with people regardless of how they saw you. He’s found connecting with the people he’s photographing to be a major influence on creating images that allows him to represent people as they truly are.

His work focuses on social justice issues and the criminal legal system, but he really just loves going on any assignment he is called for. He sees each assignment as an opportunity to find and make a great picture - even though that doesn’t always happen - but also as an opportunity to learn and grow as a photographer.

Randy Brown is a Colorado-based documentary photographer working on projects that address socio/cultural issues. His 35-year photography career has offered opportunities to work with diverse clients, primarily through editorial and academic platforms. Examples include two Indonesia-based projects, Sumatra and Borneo, with the University of Denver Department of Anthropology. Another project with organizations helping veterans with PTSD and addiction issues involved rafting trips in the Colorado River and Cataract Canyon.

Brown is now photographing and writing a project addressing a decade-long drought, the exportation of critical water resources and their existential threat to the agricultural community in the San Luis Valley in South Central Colorado

“In The Middle of Everywhere” is a documentary project giving voice to families and individuals facing the external threat of private exportation of scarce water resources amid a multi-year drought.

This part of the larger project focuses on water transfers to the highly developed Colorado Front Range from the state’s San Luis Valley by water developers working through the Colorado Water Court.

The images point at the complexities, history, spirituality, ruggedness and dedication to preserving an important way of life for all residents of the San Luis Valley of Colorado.

The project's photographs document those on the front lines of preserving water resources – families and individuals, ranchers and farmers – as well as those whose lives the agriculture industry affects.
