ASMP Member Feature: Randy Thomae

Randy is developing his own niche - tight ski racing photography, shot on course, in high resolution (60 megapixels) for editorial, commercial, and fine art - printing up to 8 feet wide. While most pros hike up with spectators from the bottom with a 600 prime, Randy skis the whole course before each run and selects the best spot based on the light, course set, terrain, and safety - close to (but not at) where skiers are likely to crash. At a recent NCAA D1 race, he was 10 feet off the gates standing on a 30 degree pitch. Post processing is handled in Capture One with a Tangent Wave 2 controller and Wacom tablet. His fine art prints use many layers, luminosity masking, hand drawn curves, hand masked customized sharpening and noise reduction to get the look he wants. This year he was invited to Beaver Creek to shoot the top ski racers in the world   on-course   at the Birds of Prey World Cup.
