Program Director's Corner

Get tips and insight from Program Directors on choosing radiology and making the most of the program. This issue's featured Program Director is Karuna Raj, MD, Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Here are her notes:

On choosing radiology:

Radiology is an intellectually stimulating specialty that combines cutting-edge technology with critical decision-making. When considering radiology as a potential career path, ask yourself if you enjoy problem-solving, pattern recognition, and playing a vital role in patient care behind the scenes. Shadowing radiologists and engaging in radiology electives can help confirm your interest. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, as radiologists work closely with clinicians across all specialties. The field of radiology offers so many diverse subspecialties and career paths, academic, private practice, interventional radiology, and more, so think about how these paths may align with your long-term goals.

On making the most of your residency program:

Residency training is the foundation of your future practice as a radiologist, so I recommend approaching it with curiosity, commitment, and a drive to excel. Learn actively every day by asking questions, seeking feedback from faculty, and reviewing cases beyond the reading room. Embrace call shifts, as they build confidence and independence, which are crucial to your success. Teamwork is essential, so develop strong relationships with technologists and referring clinicians. And don’t forget to take care of your well-being -- residency is a marathon, not a sprint!
