ASNR Young Professionals Newsletter Fall 2022
Pearls from the Pros -- Christine Glastonbury, MD

In the latest installment of “Pearls from the Pros,” Dr. Andrew Callen interviews Dr. Christine Glastonbury, neuroradiologist and a Professor of Clinical Radiology, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and Radiation Oncology. She is also the Radiology Vice Chair for Academic Affairs at the University of California, San Francisco.

From the interview: "I wish I could go back to the beginning with the understanding I have now that the nature of medicine is that at every single stage of your career, you are in a position of leadership, whether you realize it or not. The question is: how are you going to actualize that leadership to serve your community?" Read the full interview here.

If you have an idea for colleagues that you would like to see featured in this segment, please reach out to Yi Li, MD.

NEW: ASNR Offering Two-Year Junior Memberships
The ASNR Board of Directors recently approved a new, two-year ASNR Junior Membership dues pricing structure. Members who are graduating neuroradiology fellows will be able to join ASNR their first year out of training for $200; the second year following completion of fellowship, membership dues are $400. Once members are out of training for three years, the full dues of $625 will apply. This graduated dues increase is intended to ease the financial impact on neuroradiology fellows transitioning from ASNR MIT membership to full ASNR membership. If you have completed your neuroradiology fellowship in the past two years and need assistance with your renewal, please contact [email protected].

Wellness Corner: Sweet Dreams To All and To All A Good Night!

Are you a night owl or an early bird? Regardless of your avian preference, we would like to share some insights on what we often neglect…SLEEP!

On average, one sleep cycle takes about 90 minutes (SD 20 minutes). Each cycle comprises light sleep, REM sleep, and deep sleep. It’s thought that deep sleep has the strongest association with health benefits. The EEG patterns of being awake, light sleep, and REM sleep are similar but markedly different from the slow oscillating EEG waves of deep sleep (delta waves).

Persistent sleep deprivation has been associated with decreased immune system, decreased memory, dementia, and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

In 2013, the glymphatic system was first described, which clears waste via a unique system of perivascular channels that is made of astroglial cells. It promotes efficient elimination of proteins and metabolites from the central nervous system. It is hypothesized that the glymphatic system clearsβ-amyloid among other waste substances from the brain and plays a vital role in lipid transport. Interestingly enough, it mainly happens during sleep!

A lot of interesting work is happening on this topic: have a look at the links and references below. With that, we wish you a restful sleep!
