ASNR Young Professionals Newsletter Summer 2022
Pearls from the Pros -- David Yousem, MD, MBA

In the latest installment of “Pearls from the Pros,” Dr. Vivek Yedavalli, interviews Dr. David Yousem, Professor of Radiology and the Vice Chairman of Faculty Development in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and Associate Dean of Professional Development at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is also a Past President of ASNR.

As Dr. Yousem shares, "Regardless of what environment you are in, being excellent clinically garners your colleagues’ respect and your clinicians’ trust. Starting out, take the extra time on your studies to ensure that they are useful reports by making your impressions succinct and informative while also minimizing typos. Look things up when you are unsure and ask your senior colleagues for their valuable input. This clinical excellence will pay off as you continue in your career whether it be in private or academic practice." Read the full interview here.

If you have an idea for colleagues that you would like to see featured in this segment, please reach out to Yi Li, MD.

Wellness Corner: Small Habits

Everyone has unfulfilled goals, resolutions, and wishes. For instance, getting fit, reading that book, or learning a new language. It’s as though we never have enough time, right?

Well, not really... According to James Clear’s book "Atomic Habits," he argues that tiny, daily habits are how we make lasting changes and achieve big goals.

Clear gives 4 key tips to make daily habits stick:

  1. Make it obvious: Be aware of your daily habits and their underlying motivation. "Stack" new habits by connecting them to the existing ones.
  2. Make it attractive: Dopamine spikes in the brain in anticipation of a reward, not when you receive it. So, use the dopamine spike mechanism to your advantage by "temptation bundling."
  3. Make it easy: Habits will stick with repetition. Start small. He proposes a 2-minute rule to stop procrastinating. If you can’t execute your habit, find a simple 2-minute version of it. Anything is better than skipping it completely -- just show up.
  4. Make it satisfying: Implement a method to reward your good habits and punish bad habits.
Perhaps even with your busy schedule, these tiny habits can have a big effect on your long-term goals.
