ASNR Young Professionals Newsletter Summer 2024

Pearls from the Pros -- Dr. Jody Tanabe

In the latest installment of “Pearls from the Pros,” Dr. Ashesh Thaker interviews Dr. Jody Tanabe, Chief of Neuroradiology at the University of Colorado, prior Vice Chair of Research, and prior senior editor of the AJNR. She is an accomplished physician-scientist with a focus on neural correlates of substance use disorders. In her career, Dr. Tanabe has mentored numerous students, radiology trainees, PhD investigators, and neuroradiology faculty.

From the interview: "My recommendation for early career faculty is to choose two areas to focus on: one is a disease and the second is a technique. You’ll be able to use the technique across different disorders in neuro and within a disease you can use different techniques. Think of it as an intersection—a way to try to narrow it down. It might feel slow at first because by limiting yourself, you will have to say no to other low-hanging fruit." Read the full interview here.

Young Professionals Programming a Hit at ASNR24

This year’s ASNR24 featured more than 90 scientific sessions focused on emerging topics, neuroradiology essentials, policy and practice updates, and discussions with international and industry colleagues. ASNR committees and specialty groups also offered programming, including the ASNR YPS Committee. YPS sessions at ASNR24 included:

Young Professionals Programming: My Pathway to Leadership

Young Professionals Programming: Internationally Connecting Radiology Societies

Young Professionals Programming: Private Practice 101: Pearls & Pitfalls

Additionally, the Young Professionals Mentoring Reception (pictured right) gave early career members the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions with their peers, as well as ASNR senior members. Afterwards, light refreshments were enjoyed.

Wellness Corner: Forty-Five Good Things

Should we strive to be happy? Sometimes, striving for happiness can be like striving for perfection, which can be elusive and unachievable. Tal Ben-Shahar, writer and lecturer at Harvard, argues that we should instead strive to be happier.

Given the increasing rates of healthcare worker burnout, we could afford a bit of “happier-ness.” Shahar describes a tool that has been widely studied before and after him. The good news is that it is simple and consistently effective. Writing down 3 good things per day, either work-related or just about the whole day, is reported to improve emotional exhaustion significantly, decrease symptoms of depression, have a positive effect, and overall increase happiness, specifically within healthcare workers (Saxton & Adair, BMJ Open 2019; Gold et al. Ann Fam Med 2023).

The Three Good Things diary is based on the idea that we can train ourselves to see the

positives around us and have gratitude. Do that for 9 weeks, totaling 45 workdays, and you should already see an effect. Which good things did you experience today?

Wishing you a happier week ahead!
