Wellness Corner: Moral Injury in Radiology: Recognizing the Invisible Wound

Radiologists often face systemic pressures—like heavy workloads or rigid policies—that prevent them from acting in line with their ethical standards. This misalignment can lead to moral injury, a deep psychological distress distinct from burnout. While burnout involves exhaustion, moral injury stems from violating one’s moral code, leading to guilt, shame, and a sense of betrayal.

How to Address Moral Injury:

• Acknowledge moral distress without self-blame.
• Communicate openly about ethical challenges within teams.
• Advocate for institutional policies that support ethical care.
• Practice self-care to stay aligned with personal values.
