Pearls from the Pros

This is a new feature of the newsletter in which we will try to bring to you insights from our more experienced colleagues so that we can all benefit from their experience. ASNR Fellowship Curriculum

Through a joint effort between the ASNR Fellowship Directors Committee and the Young Professional Section, ASNR is proud to present a curated Neuroradiology Fellowship Curriculum to help supplement the curricular offerings at individual institutions. Lectures and articles have been selected from a variety of sources including the ASNR annual meetings, regional and subspecialty society meetings, webinars, and resources from other organizations. Selected topics have been cross-referenced against the Fellowship Curriculum Document initially created in 2017. This is intended to be an iterative process with annual refinement as new lectures and topics are developed. Please check it out here.

AMA Update

Thank you for the opportunity to represent the ASNR at this year’s virtual AMA meeting as our YPS-RFS Delegate. The main theme of this year’s conference was our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on a number of trainee issues.

There was a focus on the mental health of trainees with the increased rates of burnout caused by the pressures of the pandemic. The leadership recommended that we continually provide and market available resources and, when necessary, give them time to cope with the unusual stressors in this setting.

Concerns over the quality of training during the pandemic were also discussed. Given the staff shortage in certain regions, non-physician staff was independently supervising medical trainees, which raised significant concerns. This was mostly in reference to conducting procedures (including LPs, myelograms, drains, etc pertinent to our specialty). Trainees and leadership at all institutions were told to monitor and report any such instances to the AMA.

Lastly, there were also concerns over the disparity of care amongst certain demographics during the pandemic. The leadership emphasized awareness of any biases and formal training when necessary.

ASNR21 Registration

Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and related government restrictions on travel, quarantines, and gathering size, ASNR has been forced to cancel the in-person portion of ASNR21 and to replace it with an all virtual and on-demand event. 

ASNR will deliver the same Annual Meeting Program that our attendees have come to expect, with more than 75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, and 27 SA-CME/SAM credits, numerous opportunities for networking, new virtual social events, a virtual tradeshow, AND the added bonus of on-demand availability that allows you to attend on your schedule.

Regional and Specialty Society Liaison Updates
ASFNR

There are a few key updates from ASFNR as below:

1. ASFNR Presents: A new live lecture series featuring experts in BOLD imaging, Perfusion Imaging, AI, PET-MRI, and DTI. The next upcoming live webinar “AI for Neuroradiology” will take place on February 5th, 2021. Free registration is open to all.

2. Save the date! 14th Annual ASFNR Meeting will take place on September 18-21, 2021, Santa Fe, NM

3. The ASFNR John L. Ulmer Translational Trainee Award is meant to reward a trainee-led research project that will contribute to the clinical translation of advanced neuroimaging techniques. Application details can be found here.

ASHNR

ASHNR has been working very hard to adapt to changing circumstances due to COVID-19 with multiple new web-based initiatives. This has resulted in enhanced international participation and collaboration. Recently, in collaboration with the ESHNR, the ASHNR launched an educational webinar series called “Two Heads and Necks are Better than One (HN^2)”, thus far covering topics such as the hypopharynx and cervical (o)esophagus, the oropharynx, and the larynx. In addition, the popular “Temporal Bone (T-Bone) Time” webinar series and “Case of the Week” and “Member Spotlight” social media feeds have been ongoing. Another recent accomplishment is the launching of the new ASHNR website (ashnr.org) in October. Dr. Fischbein is also working hard to lead planning of the 2021 ASHNR conference, which is sure to be a great one whether it is in person, hybrid, or online only.

ASSR

In 2020, the American Society of Spine Radiology has adapted to the pandemic which emerged in the United States shortly following the conclusion of the successful annual 2020 meeting in Dana Point, CA. During the pandemic, the ASSR COVID-19 task force offered practice guidelines to Radiologists interacting with patients, particularly in the spine interventional setting. Given ongoing social distancing measures and travel restrictions, the decision has been made that the ASSR 2021 Meeting will be virtual. The program is in the process of being finalized and promises to be an outstanding meeting. In particular, the Young Professional Session will have a number of talks targeting junior radiology faculty including academic promotion and practice building. 

We look forward to interacting with our colleagues again in-person in the near future!

Save the Date for the 2021 ASSR Spine Symposium, February 19-21, 2021
Mark your calendars and plan to attend the 2021 ASSR Spine Symposium. Since the spring of 2020, we have been faced with triple crises; an unprecedented pandemic, accompanied by economic and social justice challenges. We will be discussing these important issues in the context of spinal care in our opening session, The Spine in Triple Crises. View this and other sessions in the meeting schedule. Registration is also now available.

SENRS had its virtual annual meeting on October 22, 2020, which included many wonderful and educational talks. This content will remain available On Demand for 90 days following the meeting! You can still access this content, go to SENRS.net to register. A total of 7 SAMS credits are available.
