HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM ASO DIRECTOR
Dear Students,
As we approach exam season and the end of another year, I would like to sincerely thank you for your continuous efforts and hard work. You have persevered this year, working diligently on your course work while facing uncertainties and obstacles caused by the pandemic. I am inspired by the way you support each other in your courses and as a community of learners offering advice and encouragement. Thank you for extending care to each other especially during this time.
During the December break, may you find time to relax and enjoy spending time with family and friends. On behalf of the ASO student support team and myself, we would like to wish you all the best with your end of term activities.
Wishing you a new year filled with compassion, kindness, and good health.
Wanda Beyer

TAKE A BREAK AND CELEBRATE
Last week you received an invitation to the Faculty of Arts & Science Let’s Take a Break and Celebrate event. We have so much to celebrate and to look forward to as the fall term draws to a close. Before we know it, final assignments will be completed and the New Year will be upon us. All the best to those of you who will be completing final exams and assignments in the coming weeks – we hope you will be able to take a break and celebrate with us.
In addition to celebrating the end of the fall term, we will look ahead to the winter season. At the event, we will encourage people to share their thoughts on fall term as well as the diverse ways we all celebrate the winter season.
From 2:00pm - 3:00pm EST, you will have the opportunity to visit with colleagues and peers in a breakout room and/or participate in photo and trivia contests with the chance to win a prize of a $75 shopping spree at the Queen’s Bookstore or Tri-colour outlet.
If you would like to participate in our Photo Contest, please email your favourite winter photo (in Canada or anywhere in the world) to fasmarketing@queensu.ca by the end of the day on December 6. This photo could represent how you celebrate the season, you doing your favourite winter activity, eating your favourite winter dish, or anything as long as it is a captured photo and not a stock image. We also ask that you submit a brief description of the photo with your submission.
We hope to see you there!

As the term is coming to an end, we would like to wish you the best of luck on your exams and final assessments. We know this time of year can be stressful. Check out the resources from Student Academic Success Services to help you study effectively as well as some of the wellness activities and resources below. Please look after yourself and know that we are here to support you.
If you are unwell on the day of an exam and don't feel that you can write, DO NOT write. There are other options available to you. Please visit the FAS Academic Considerations website for information on the process.
We would also like to remind you to be fair to yourself and to your classmates. Cheating and short cuts may seem tempting, but Academic Integrity is extremely important to all of us at Queen's and breaching it is just not worth it. Let's finish 2021 strong together!
Additional Information for students writing proctored exams:
Check your exam date and time in SOLUS
Your exam date and time can be found in your SOLUS account. On your SOLUS main page, under the ‘Academics’ section, click on the ‘other academic…’ dropdown menu; then choose ‘Exam Schedule’ (it will be the 11th menu item listed). Click on it, then click on the ‘Go’ icon; from this screen, you will be able to view your exam date and time.
Practice test
As you will notice in your onQ course page, you are given the opportunity to take a generic Practice Test with Examity between November 23rd and December 8th. This practice test will allow you to run through the authentication process, ensuring the technical requirements are met. If you encounter technical issues during your practice test that Examity support cannot fix, you should contact the ITS Support Centre for help.
Examity online proctoring
All proctored exams for distance students, and students with all remote/hybrid courses will be written with Examity online proctoring. You should have received an announcement in your onQ course page with directions for logging into Examity and scheduling your exam(s). All details will be provided in this announcement, so please be sure to check your onQ page carefully. Although there is an allotted 36-hour window for you to schedule your exam, we ask that you schedule your exam as close to the date and start time that your exam is set in SOLUS. Be sure to indicate your correct time zone when creating your Examity profile, or you could miss your exam.
Accommodations
Students who have submitted a Letter of Accommodation through the Academic Accommodations and Considerations portal on their onQ page will have their applicable accommodations applied to their exam on Examity.
We wish you the best of luck on your exams and final assessments!

ACADEMIC CONSIDERATION - TIPS AND ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
We know that extenuating circumstances can happen at any time which could impact your academic performance. The Academic Consideration team is here to help if you are dealing with a short-term situation that is beyond your control. Check out the following tips, which may prove useful to you as we approach a busy exam season!
- Students must apply for Academic Consideration as soon as the need becomes apparent. 3-day requests for Academic Consideration must be submitted no later than 24 hours after a brief absence (ex: If you need Academic Consideration from December 1st - 3rd, you have until December 4th to submit).
-
Did you know you can apply even if you don't have your supporting documentation yet? For 3-day requests: All students have access to one 3-day request for Academic Consideration per term that does not require documentation. For 4-day to 3-month requests: Simply select "documentation not available" in the Portal. Students have 5 business days to submit supporting documentation. For more information see the "Supporting Documentation" section of our webpage.
-
All requests during the final exam period require supporting documentation. For 3 Day requests, you may be eligible for an attestation form if you do not have documentation, see the "Supporting Documentation" section of our webpage for more information. For 4-Day - 3 Month requests, select "documentation not available" and reach out to the academic considerations team for support.
-
NEW! Not sure where to start when applying for Academic Consideration, or if your situation qualifies? The Academic Consideration team will be offering Zoom Office Hours at the following times to support you: Tuesdays from 2:00 - 3:30pm, Thursdays 10:30am - 12:00pm. Simply click Zoom Office Hours link during these times to be connected with a staff member of the Academic Consideration Team.
All requests for Academic Consideration must be submitted via the Academic Consideration Request Portal (ACRP). If you are taking a course outside of FAS, the link in your onQ course for academic consideration request may not be the correct one - please ensure you use the link on the FAS website.
If you have further questions about Academic Consideration, please review our webpage which includes information on how to apply, frequently asked questions, supporting documentation and more! The Academic Consideration team can also be reached at asc.consideration@queensu.ca.

ACADEMIC APPEALS
The academic appeal process allows you to submit a letter explaining any extenuating circumstances beyond your control that prevented you from being able to complete or do well in your course(s). These are often reasons such
as family emergencies, health, or legal issues. You’ll need to attach a note or official documentation from a professional (such as a doctor) to explain the timeline of your situation and its impact on your course work.

WINTER 2022 AND SUMMER 2022 COURSE ENROLMENT IN SOLUS
Many of the online Winter term courses are full. The course capacity for some courses may increase, so please keep checking in SOLUS to see if spaces become available. Most single-term Arts and Science courses will be set up with wait lists. This option gives you an opportunity to join a wait list for a class that is full. You may also want to consider using the SWAP option, which will allow you to go on a wait list for a class that is in conflict with an enrolled course. When the SWAP function is used, SOLUS will add you to the wait listed course when a space becomes available and will also drop you from the class you chose to swap. For more course registration tips, visit the FAS Course Registration website.
