Seasons Greetings from ASPR TRACIE! It has been a true honor working closely with so many of you over the past year and we look forward to learning more from you and sharing your experiences in 2019. As always, if you have a resource to share or need technical assistance, we encourage you to reach out to us. We wish you and yours a healthy holiday season! Many of our stakeholders are involved in supporting community recovery efforts from recent natural disasters and no-notice incidents; our Natural Disasters Topic Collection and Select Mass Violence Resources page can help. As Ebola continues to spread and claim lives overseas and flu cases increase in the northern hemisphere, we hope that the information on our Select Infectious Disease Resources page helps you prepare your facilities. You can now check out the presentations your colleagues recently made at the 2018 National Healthcare Coalition Preparedness Conference. Log in if you have an account or choose No thanks. Click on Schedule to be taken to the page where presentations are listed by day. In this issue of The Express, we highlight new and key ASPR TRACIE resources, a recent and upcoming webinar, and updates from our three domains. |
New! Major Earthquakes: Potential Health and Medical Implications (Summary) |
This tip sheet summarizes the full report, which provides an overview of the potential significant health and medical response and recovery needs facing areas affected by a major earthquake with or without additional cascading events. |
New! Medical Surge and the Role of Health Clinics: Q and A |
Because of their extensive geographic coverage, strong community ties, and potential to reach medically underserved areas, health clinics play a key stakeholder role in emergency and disaster preparedness and response. ASPR TRACIE conducted an exploratory study to learn more about the scope and level of implementation of emergency management activities among health clinics. Medical Surge and the Role of Health Clinics (Questions and Answers for Clinics and Stakeholders) presents key questions that health clinics and their response partners may have and identifies action steps and available resources in response. Access the summary and full report for more information. |
New! Hospital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Planning Tool |
Created by ASPR TRACIEs Senior Editor (in close collaboration with infectious disease specialists, manufacturers and distributors, and other subject matter experts and industry leaders), this tool can help hospitals estimate minimum PPE quantities needed to manage patients infected with special pathogens. The overview sheet of this customizable Excel file summarizes the purpose and considerations. Separate sheets exist for both the initial assessment and hospitalization of patients with Ebola virus disease and other viral hemorrhagic fevers, special respiratory infections (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome/Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), and pandemic influenza. Outputs may be used pre-incident when considering PPE cache levels at the hospital and healthcare coalition level and may also inform discussions with vendors about how to ensure supply chain continuity. |
New! Emergency Prescription Assistance Program (EPAP): Hurricanes Irma and Maria, USVI Data Factsheet |
This fact sheet provides a summary of the EPAP data collected and analyzed following Hurricane Maria for the U.S. Virgin Islands only from November 2, 2017 to September 15, 2018. This EPAP overview fact sheet describes the program and provides links to related resources. |
New! Hospice and Emergency Preparedness: Experiences from the Field |
In many areas of the country, homecare and hospice agencieswhile providing critical services to patients and their loved oneshave not traditionally been part of the emergency preparedness landscape. Sheryl Pierce, RN, MS (the corporate quality assurance performance improvement director for Therapy Health Services [Texarkana, Texas]) discussed the changing role of homecare and hospice agencies in community disaster resilience in this article. Key ASPR TRACIE Resources |
As we close out the year, ASPR TRACIE would like to take the opportunity to highlight select resources that can provide stakeholders with a basic introduction to healthcare system preparedness. These include the following Topic Collections:
In addition, we have a number of technical assistance (TA) responses that are designed to guide stakeholders new to healthcare emergency preparedness. Access the summary of TA requests to find out more! |
Recent and Upcoming Webinars |
The recording from the recent ASPR TRACE webinar Hospital-Based Incident Command Systems: Real Experiences and Practical Applications (held on November 14, 2018) is now available. This webinar features speakers providing an overview of hospital-based incident command and sharing lessons learned from activating their systems in response to recent incidents (e.g., Hurricane Sandy and the 2017 California wildfires). On January 29, from 1:00-2:00 PM (ET), public and private partners will share how to use ASPR's Healthcare and Public Health Risk Identification and Site Criticality (RISC) Toolkit, version 1.0. Learn more about this objective, data-driven, all-hazards risk assessment tool with the potential to inform emergency preparedness planning, risk management activities, and resource investments. After providing a brief description of the tool, speakers will discuss how they have implemented the RISC toolkit and share success stories and lessons learned. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions. Space is limited; register today! |
