Welcome to the Fall 2025 issue of ASTC:Notes. It’s been another busy year at the American Society of Theatre Consultants. We are now 84 members strong with a few new members and associates joining recently. We are a small group, but when you see what our members do in the performing arts design industry, one can see our impact.
Our members are working on all kinds of buildings, from traditional theatres to concert venues (both kinds: classical and popular), to houses of worship, to entertainment spaces, to cruise ships, museums, event centers, and convention centers. The breadth of our work and impact is pretty vast. These are all challenging spaces with significant technical demands that constantly evolve. Oh, and they must look great too. This is fascinating work and I’m glad to do it, as well as be associated with this group of professionals.
We’ve had a few things happening at ASTC too. We had another successful ASTC-USITT Renovation Challenge at the USITT Conference in Columbus, OH. [https://theatreconsultants.org/2025-astc-usitt-venue-renovation-challenge/] I was very impressed with the work of students as they learned just a bit about what our members face every day. They put in a lot of work, but the results are impressive. Our Codes Committee has been hard at work on some proposed changes in NFPA’s Life Safety Code and the International Building Code that should bear fruit soon, to the benefit of future buildings throughout the US. I hope you will hear about those efforts soon.
The membership met in Charleston, SC in September to sample the city’s performing arts scene and talk about topics we are all encountering. The Forum is such a great opportunity to gather, share ideas, and learn from each other. We ate pretty well too. [https://theatreconsultants.org/astc-forum-held-in-charleston-sc/] It’s an event I look forward to every year, and I’ve developed some real friendships in ASTC. Even though we are all competitors, the atmosphere at our Forum is always supportive and quite collegial.
I wish all of you the happiest holidays.
