In Ms. Angela Dormiani's upper-level history elective course, World Cultures: The History of African Americans, Indigenous Peoples, and Latinx in the United States, junior and senior scholars are currently reading Solomon Northup's 12 Years a Slave narrative.

This book was written in 1853 by a man born free in New York who was illegally kidnapped and sold into slavery for twelve years of his life. Scholars were asked to choose a scene to illustrate from the first 10 chapters they have read that really resonated with them. A few examples of their work are included above.

National School Counseling Week 2021 is Feb. 1-5, 2021. It was established to highlight the valuable contribution of school counselors. National School Counseling Week focuses on the impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

This week and next week at ASTEC, counselors are meeting with scholars to help them choose classes for the next school year. Our counselors are pictured here: Dean of Student Success-Casey Rainbolt, High School Counselor-Beth Dillard, Middle School Counselor Jean Florea.
This year, we will have each grade level on Team Black attend for a day and Team Gold will attend the next day. No one class should have more than 15 students.

In-person attendance schedule

Tuesday, Feb 9th
8th Grade Black & 11th Grade Black

Wednesday, Feb 10th
8th Grade Gold & 11th Grade Gold

  • Scholars will rotate to their assigned classes for the day they are on campus.
  • Counselors will go to each English class to complete the course selection process.
  • All classes, other than English, will teach their in-person classes.
  • Scholars will wear masks, and desk shields will be utilized.
  • The faculty will wear masks and shields when scholars are present
  • Please remind scholars to bring their school-issued Chromebooks to school with them.

Scholars will be able to pick up a "grab-and-go" breakfast. Lunch will also be provided.
We will release scholars at the end of the day with the instruction that High Schoolers go to the high school driveline and Middle Schoolers go to the middle school driveline. Because our numbers on campus will be so small, we will be able to socially distance without using the driveline numbers. The scholars will wait outside with teachers assisting to ensure their safety.
ASTEC’s 9th Grader for A Day was a tremendous success. Scholars who attended on Monday, February 1, learned about the differences between middle school and high school, including the many activities and athletic opportunities afforded to them. Scholars were socially distanced, yet they learned how close their 9th grade year truly is.

Speaking to the incoming 9th graders were Headmaster Ms. Michelle Rowland, Dean of Student Success Ms. Casey Rainbolt, their future High School Counselor Beth Dillard, Dean of Students Ms. Tammy Russell, and Dean of Middle School Instruction Mr. Danny Porter. They also heard from high school teachers Mr. Chris Pratt and Ms. Kelsey Deal. They met all of their 9th grade teachers during a snack break where they were able to ask questions and share their excitement.

Student Council members spoke from the upperclassmen point-of-view. They also did a fun activity and introduced Sparky the Comet, ASTEC’s mascot. Two scholars, Christopher Borrego and Karen Mancinas, won a yearbook by putting their name in a drawing.

These scholars will return to campus on February 9 (Team Black) and February 10 (Team Gold) to work with their high school counselor in selecting classes via the hour they have English. They will rotate through all classes for that day.
Keep the Chromebook in a safe area.

Keep your Chromebook in an area that is free from things that can cause damage, such as pets or your brothers and sisters with their toys.

Don’t eat or drink around your Chromebook.

Eating or drinking while using your Chromebook is tempting but can end up being a very costly decision. Do not drink or eat when working online and do not have food or liquids near your Chromebook. By keeping potentially harmful things away from your computer you will prevent the damage they can cause and the headache and expense of full replacement costs.

Be careful with your Chromebook.

Laptop computers are easily damaged. Be careful not to carry it by the screen, or to close a pencil between the keyboard and screen. Do not use the school Chromebook for gaming, as keys will get damaged with repeated hitting of the same keys. If possible, carry your Chromebook in a special padded case to keep it safe from bumping around. Use your Chromebook on a table or counter. Balancing your Chromebook on your knees can result in it crashing to the floor.

Remember, the school-issued Chromebook is loaned, and damage results in costs of repair or replacement.
ASTEC’s Future Cities team, sponsored by teachers Ms. Karen Walker, Ms. Karissa Pacione and Mr. Chris Schat, has been working hard to compete virtually in regionals. While they will compete virtually not all of the work could be done virtually.

In addition to google meets, team members have met in person twice weekly with sponsors to write and practice their script for the video presentation and build the city model.
Teams are required to submit three major components which are evaluated by multiple groups of judges: 1500 word City Essay, Video Slideshow Presentation of Project Preparation, and a 7-minute video presentation of the actual city model.
This year our city is on the moon and features the best ways to use the moon resources to create a safe/healthy habitat, and the trade-offs and risks associated with colonization.
Future Cities team members take on engineering challenges by presenting innovative ideas about science through real world competition. The ASTEC team’s “future city” is pictured here.

Eighth grade team members include: Caden Blackmon-Williams, Ashley Lopez-Ortiz, and 7th Grade member: Cinthya-Ortiz-Solval.
The PSAT was administered last week January 26 to Team Gold. This test measures college readiness, helps them to access scholarships, and practice for the SAT. It was great to see and serve these sophomores.

El PSAT se administró la semana pasada el 26 de Enero al equipo dorado. Esta prueba mide la preparación para la universidad, les ayuda a acceder a becas y a practicar para el SAT. Fue genial ver y servir a estos estudiantes de segundo año.
