ASTEC Charter Schools has begun taking enrollment applications for new and returning students for the 2021-22 school year.

Current ASTEC students will be mailed an intent to enroll form with a self-addressed, stamped envelope on Monday, January 11. In addition, an online form has been sent to all ASTEC scholar’s email addresses. You may choose to return the form in either format. Please return by January 29

Applications returned after January 29 will be placed at the bottom of the lottery list below the new lottery students.

All new students must apply for the lottery system through the SMART Choice Application (One App) online at: https://oneappok.com/login.

The lottery will be held February 12, 2021.

If a family has more than one student applying for the lottery an entry must be made for each student.

Siblings of current ASTEC students will be placed at the top of the selection list, but must still enter the lottery system on One App before the deadline.

SPELLING BEE
ASTEC will host a local spelling bee competition on Monday, January 25, at 9:00 a.m. in the high school auditorium. ASTEC has 20 very enthusiastic middle school scholars who are ready to compete for the opportunity to advance to the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee or a chance to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The Oklahoma City Thunder is excited to bring students and schools the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee through the Inaugural Thunder Regional Spelling Bee, presented by American Fidelity Assurance Company.

The bee provides multiple academic, literacy and life skill benefits which include increased vocabulary, concepts to develop correct English usage, opportunity for development of self-confidence, responsibility and autonomy. It also provides valuable experience in developing the necessary skills for success in public speaking, language comprehension, improved study techniques and new concepts mastery.
PSAT TEST
ASTEC 10th graders who are on Team Gold will take the PSAT test Tuesday, January 26 in a socially-distanced atmosphere in the high school auditorium. Scholars should arrive and be ready to begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. The test will end at 12:00 noon.

Bring a mask, school ID and a TI-73 or TII-80-86 and 89 calculator. Scholars who do not have a calculator, will be provided one along with pencils.

The PSAT is a national test that measures college readiness, and provides valuable information to students, parents, and educators.

Attendance is mandatory, and scholars who do not take the test will be counted absent for the day.

We look forward to seeing everyone on January 26!
ATTENTION SENIORS
Seniors who have not spoken to the representative to order their cap and gown should come to school on Wednesday or Thursday, January 13 or 14 from 11-1.

HOW TO TALK TO CHILDREN ABOUT WEDNESDAY'S EVENTS
An angry mob stormed the Capitol building on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of both the House and Senate, as they met to certify the results of November's election.

As the unprecedented moment unfolded, the nation's television stations all tuned in to the mass chaos and violence. And millions of Americans working and learning at home during the pandemic pivoted their attention to the scene. Children included.

Parents "should strive to protect their children from viewing the chaos," the Baylor College of Medicine recommended in a news release sent out Wednesday afternoon, as elected officials took to Twitter to condemn the mob's actions.

And Dr. Laurel Williams, associate professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, offered up specific tips:

  • Limit social media
  • Limit news coverage
  • Watch news together (if a child is interested or worried). Ask what they heard and learned, or what they are concerned about. Then, help provide them with facts to address their questions.
  • Do activities that reflect your values as a family to help counteract feelings of helplessness
  • Keep to your routine
  • Be kind and pass kindness along
