Join the ASTHO Performance Dashboard Refinement Project

ASTHO is currently finalizing a set of internal business process, operational, and administrative indicators for use across all health agencies. The ASTHO Performance Dashboard (PD) is intended to serve as a tool for state health agency executives to utilize and track comparable benchmarks that can be used toward improved decision making, leading to more efficient and quality health.  In Spring 2016, ASTHO concluded a pilot test and evaluation of the approximately 35 PD indicators in nine different states and territories.  Qualitative and Quantitative evaluation results provided detailed feedback on the utility, value, and feasibility of each indicator.

As an opportunity for further growth, pilot sites recommended and agreed that further piloting and deeper investigation into the measurement specification and operational definition for the indicators by health agency subject matter experts was needed.  To address this recommendation, ASTHO will convene four separate workgroups from May 2017 - July 2017.  Over the course of 3 - 4 calls, ASTHO will facilitate the " Improvement Workgroup " to gain critical feedback to inform the comparability, measurement, and potential benchmarking for seven  (7) performance and quality improvement indicators.

ASTHO is seeking health agency staff with job experience and frequent interaction with process/quality improvement to contribute to the workgroup.  Based on the feedback gained, the indicators will be modified, and a final set of refined indicators will be released to all health agencies in Fall 2017.

Community-Based Health Needs Assessment Activities: Opportunities for Collaboration Between Public Health Departments and Rural Hospitals

ASTHO and NOSORH have collaborated on  an issue brief about community health needs assessments (CHNAs).   This issue brief provides an overview of the requirements and standards for some rural hospitals and health departments to conduct CHNAs. These exercises can help stakeholder to identify and address health problems in rural communities. They are also an opportunity for health systems and health departments to collaborate on similar activities that may be mandated by separate authorities and for them to leverage their requirements to become a means of addressing population health challenges in rural areas. The issue brief includes several state-specific examples of how these partnerships can be created and maintained at the state and local levels.
