ASTM F24 Trampoline Park Safety Update
The ASTM F24.60 Subcommittee on Special Rides and Attractions met recently at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park in Peoria, Arizona for two days of meetings. The committee's special task group on trampoline parks reviewed comments received from the recently closed subcommittee ballot on ASTM WK35776: New Practice for the Classification, Design, Manufacture, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Trampoline Parks, and prepared the draft standard for a second ballot on the matter. Twenty-nine industry stakeholders were in attendance, representing trampoline court manufacturers, franchise groups, park owners, trade groups, and special interest groups from Canada, New Zealand, and the United States.
Members of the International Association of Trampoline Parks, ASTM Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices, and ASTM Committee F08.17 on Trampolines and Related Equipment contributed to the new draft version of the ballot, which will be released for voting soon.
"The IATP members are working diligently with the ASTM F24 task group to finalize and publish an ASTM standard for trampoline parks," commented Jeff Platt, Chairman of the International Association of Trampoline Parks. "We realize the necessity of such a standard and are making tremendous progress. As with any physical activity there is inherent risk involved. Our hope is that this standard helps mitigate that risk from both design and operations perspectives." "Trampoline Parks are one of the fastest growing segments of the amusement industry," said Phil Slaggert, Chairman of the F24.60 task group for trampoline courts. "Over 1000 volunteer hours have gone into the making of a comprehensive standard practice for these very unique attractions."
The ASTM Committee F24.60 task group meets weekly using ASTM's Webex virtual meeting program on Thursdays from 1:00pm - 2:45pm EST. The next in-person meeting will be held July 18-19, 2012 in conjunction with the summer meeting of the International Association of Trampoline Parks in Illinois. All interested stakeholders are invited to attend.
The next ASTM Committee F24 meeting will be held October 18-20, 2012 in Reno, Nevada and will be open to all with an interest in safety and a desire to contribute to amusement industry standards. Additional information for prospective members can be found on the organization's website.
