Welcome to our November of
The Month in Review!
The month of November is always a wonderful time at Arkansas State University-Newport. The maple trees on the Newport campus are in full glory and the Thanksgiving holiday gives a welcome break for staff and students.
Thanksgiving also ushers in the holiday season that will remain with us for the remainder of the year. As the days get shorter, parties, get-togethers and other holiday-centered events begin to dot the calendar as we wrap up the fall semester and prepare for winter. Thanksgiving feasts and potlucks take place on each campus, staff members help prepare for the Christmas season by helping to decorate our communities and build floats for parades, and schedules deviate from the norm as everyone begins to feel the holiday spirit.
All of us at ASU-Newport are thankful for our families, our jobs and for the times we spend together giving back to the communities we serve.
Giving thanks also leads to a time of reflection for the blessings that we receive individually and for those we share. Please join us in celebrating again as we reflect on the month of November and the wonderful events that highlighted this season.
As always, your comments and suggestions are wanted and welcomed. Please share feedback with Van Provence,
van_provence@asun.edu
and Ike Wheeler,
ike_wheeler@asun.edu
.
Our goal is for readers to not only be informed, but feel connected to ASUN.
E
njoy, best regards, and we hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Madden, Wortham Named to Board of Directors
Arkansas State University-Newport announced in November that Chris Madden, Director of Surgical Technology at ASUN and Jeremy Wortham, ASUN Instructor of Surgical Technology, have been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Arkansas State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists.
The Association of Surgical Technologists was established in 1969 by members of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Hospital Association (AHA), and the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
Today, surgical technologists are working in one of the fastest growing professions in the country. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the surgical technology profession will grow faster than the average of all other occupations through the year 2020, and it is anticipated that the volume of surgery will increase exponentially due to the expanding senior population.
"We are extremely proud of Chris and Jeremy for being appointed to the Board of Directors for the Arkansas State Assembly," said Crystal Rose, ASUN Dean for Nursing, Allied Health and Community Services. "Their leadership in making ASU-Newport's Surgical Technology program the best in our region is certainly reflected in this appointment. Both Chris and Jeremy are widely respected by their colleagues in both the academic and medical fields for their efforts and abilities in building an outstanding Surgical Technology program at ASU-Newport."
As the oldest and most widely recognized professional organization for surgical technologists, AST's primary purpose is to ensure that surgical technologists have the knowledge and skills to administer patient care of the highest quality.
AST, the only national organization that represents more than 80,000 surgical technologists, is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors. On the local level, 48 formed state assemblies to address member concerns and issues.

"I am honored and excited to begin working in this new role with the college and its partners to provide high quality educational opportunities that support a strong and competitive workforce for our region," said Ayers. "Having been a part of the ASU-Newport team, I have had the unique opportunity to experience the innovative approaches we are using to support academic success and economic development.
