ATAC VPs REPORTING IN!
ATAC CRITICAL OF CTA PASSENGER PROTECT REGS DUE TO MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS

ATAC sent a letter to Minister Garneau urging his immediate attention regarding the totally inappropriate wording used within the regulation and guidance material for Aircraft Maintenance issues leading to delays and cancellations used within the new Passenger Protect Regulations that came into effect on July 15. The whole well-established concept of aircraft scheduled maintenance programs and what they are based upon was clearly not adequately understood or taken into account by TC and the CTA. ATAC will continue to work with TC and the CTA to hopefully find reasonable solutions for this important subset of the Passenger Protect Regulations.

IRCC LAUNCHES THE "X" GENDER IDENTIFIER ON CANADIAN PASSPORTS AND OTHER IRCC DOCUMENTS
Canadian citizens and residents now have the option to apply to have an "X" gender identifier on any IRCC-issued document.
Since June 4, 2019, IRCC has been offering the choice of an "X" gender identifier for those who do not identify exclusively as male or female. Individuals can apply for an "X" gender identifier on any documents issued by the department, including Canadian passports and travel documents, citizenship certificates and permanent resident cards.
To get an "X" gender identifier, first-time applicants and individuals who are renewing documents due to expire in less than 6 months can select "X" on the application form. Those who hold a document that is valid for 6 months or longer or that has no expiry date can apply to replace their document with one that has an "X" gender identifier without paying a new application fee.
Having the "X" gender identifier as an option is a significant and historic milestone in advancing the Government of Canada's commitment to diversity and inclusion. On August 31, 2017, an interim measure made it possible for individuals to request that an observation sticker be added to their passport or travel document or supporting citizenship or immigration document, noting that the sex of the bearer should read as "X". IRCC has been working with its government and private-sector partners since then to introduce the "X" gender identifier on its official documents.

This month I was honoured to be selected as an Industry Trustee at the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). AABI was created in 1988 at the initiative of 100 colleges and universities with aviation programs who recognized the need to establish standards and submit themselves to the review of their peers and the industry. Its purpose is to serve as the official accrediting body for collegiate aviation.

As demand for pilots grows worldwide, aviation education is increasingly being embraced by collegiate institutions. Whether through partnerships with existing flight training organizations or through in-house flight training programs, higher education and the aviation industry are finding shared value in partnership. AABI accreditation is increasingly recognized by industry as a hallmark of high standards in aviation training.

Among the benefits of association with AABI is the chance to interact directly with industry leaders from around the world. ATAC members benefit from these connections through exposure to new business opportunities and information. It is my privilege to work closely with the great people at both ATAC and AABI.
