WELCOME!
ATIO welcomes Jean-Gilles Pelletier to the position of Executive Director. He has a long history working with organizations in the public and non-profit sectors. We look forward to working with Jean-Gilles as we move into the new year.
GREETINGS TO ALL MEMBERS AND PARTNERS OF ATIO
I am glad to start my mandate as Executive Director (interim) of the association.

While I have had initial discussions with members of the board of directors as well as with the staff at the central office, I will be seeking insight through discussions with members in the next few weeks.

This year has certainly been a challenging year for each and every one of us. Organizations and individual workers have had to adopt new approaches and I would like to take this opportunity to underline the work of Marie, Yasmine, Sharlene, and Monique, as well as the leadership of Denis and all board members in steering the association in this troubled period.

I have worked in several non-profit and governmental organizations, working at the regional, provincial, and pan-Canadian levels, and the importance of accurate translations and interpretations has remained an essential component of the success of these organizations. Languages have remained a passion of mine and I look forward to enhancing the value of our work in connecting individuals in a time where isolation has often a normative imprint in our daily lives.

ATIO BY-LAWS: Special General Meeting

The Special General Meeting took place on Saturday, November 21, 2020. Other than a few technical hitches along the way, the meeting was successful. The 18 proposed amendments were passed by votes collected from certified members both in attendance and by proxy.

What you need to know:
While most of the amendments were editorial in nature, some will impact applicants, candidates for certification, and certified members.

Applicants
  • The criteria were expanded for applicants in court, community, and medical interpreting. This allows ATIO to increase its membership in these categories.
  • Because of the list of changes, ATIO staff are not accepting applications while we update application materials. Application submissions are suspended until February 2021.

Candidates for Certification
  • Candidates for Certification will no longer receive a membership card. (Amendment 12)
  • Candidates for Certification who already have cards will not receive renewal stickers.
  • Candidates for Certification should return their card to the office if they choose not to renew.

Certified Members
  • Only certified members will be issued membership cards. (Amendment 12)
  • Renewal stickers will be mailed in December.

The updated by-laws will be uploaded to the ATIO website as soon as the revisions are complete.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AS AN ATIO PROFESSIONAL
Renewal is ongoing
Thank you to those who have already renewed. Your continued support is greatly appreciated!

Since annual dues cover one calendar year (January to December), dues for 2021 must be paid before December 31, 2020. As of February 4, 2021, the late fee of $90.00 plus tax will apply.

Receipts, Addresses, and Email

The unfortunate side of technology is that we are often not aware of issues until something occurs. Our thanks go to members who let us know when there is a problem. Unfortunately, some things are not within our power to change.

  1. If you changed your email address in the ATIO database in the past and you did not receive a receipt, please check your old email address if you still have access to it.
  2. If you no longer have access to your old email address, please let us know so we can check your account. Receipts can be emailed on request.
  3. If you were in the ATIO registry before 2016, the mailing address shown on your receipt cannot be changed by ATIO staff because we do not have access to where that information is stored. We do not use that information for mail.

When problems occur, we do our best to investigate and make changes where we have the power to do so. No system is perfect, and we appreciate your patience.
YOUR ATIO ACCOUNT
Renewal notices will be sent again on December 8 and December 22. If you already paid, thank you. You can disregard those reminders. Stickers will be mailed to certified members in mid-December.

The ATIO Office will close from Monday, December 21, 2020 until Tuesday, January 5, 2021. If you choose to pay your renewal during this period, remember to look at the HISTORY tab on your profile after you log in, and verify whether or not you already paid your 2021 dues before proceeding. Affiliates must send proof that they are in good standing with their other association and will have to wait until the office reopens in January before they can proceed.
EXAMS
The pandemic disrupted ATIO’s normal exam practices
At the beginning of 2020, we planned seven exam dates: four entrance and practice exams and three CTTIC Certification exams.

Sadly, we were only able to run one entrance exam in February before the lockdown forced a cancellation for the other dates. We also cancelled the May CTTIC Certification Exam.

After designing new pandemic protocols to keep everyone safe, we ran a successful certification exam with 38 candidates on September 26. We were fully prepared to run our next exam on Saturday, November 28. Unfortunately, the provincial government moved to lock down the Toronto region, forcing us to cancel the exam in that city. The exam scheduled in Ottawa for six candidates went ahead.

If you have a credit to take an exam in 2021, you will receive an invitation to register before registration opens to everyone else. There will be Spring and Fall registration windows. You must use your credit before the end of 2021. A new registration form will be required.
ATTENTION TO THOSE CANDIDATES FOR CERTIFICATION WAITING FOR THE RESULTS OF THEIR CERTIFICATION EXAM
  • Paying your dues and receiving your exam results are unrelated events.
  • We appreciate your patience while you await your exam results. There are only two ATIO staff managing Secretariat activities and we are doing our best, but candidates should expect delays.
  • ATIO does not know when exam results will be sent by CTTIC. ATIO staff is not in contact with the markers. Your exam results will be sent when we get them back from CTTIC.
  • Should you choose to wait until you receive your exam results before paying your 2021 dues, you will still be subject to the late fee if you pay after February 3, 2021, just like anyone else.
PRACTICE EXAMS AT HOME
Candidates for Certification are welcome to take the practice exam at home.
The practice exam is intended to give a candidate the experience of doing the certification exam and receive the marker comment sheet. This feedback is solely to give the candidate an idea of areas for improvement, as well as what type of content, grammar, and punctuation the markers look for. Additionally, remember to be consistent writing in the target language. This is one of the first things the markers look for before going into the details.

Tip: Write as if you were addressing an international audience.

Practice exam registrations can be submitted anytime and should include the date the candidate intends to complete their exam. Candidates should allow at least ten (10) business days between the date of registration and the date of writing so the Secretariat can assemble exam materials.

All exam registrations forms should be submitted to info@atio.on.ca.
