Many of our ATM teachers have been linking their weekly classes into a series of related exercises so that a theme, a function, or a Feldenkrais Method principle can be delved into and illuminated over a period of time. Of course, any of the classes in these different series can be taken and enjoyed individually. You can drop-in to any class, anytime. But if you're interested in exploring in more depth, you can come to many of our classes week after week and follow an exploratory path over time. Take a look at the article in the middle of this e-mail for news on the specifics of what several of our teachers are doing.

Guest trainer Alan Questel's two June workshops, Choice, and The Challenge of Pleasure; the Pleasure of Challenge are this week. Alan just finished teaching a four-day training for Feldenkrais Practitioners here at the Feldenkrais Institute. Here are a couple of excerpts from participants' comments:

Pain-Free Knees, Healthy Ankles Part II, coming on Saturday, June 30th, will continue with the ideas we began to explore last Tuesday evening. The Saturday workshop will provide more detail and complexity about knee and ankle function. However, if you missed last week's evening, don't worry! We'll ease into the day on the 30th so that everyone will be sure to have a great experience. All the details are in the article below.

a Two-Day Feldenkrais Method Workshop

The Feldenkrais Institute is very excited to bring internationally acclaimed Feldenkrais Teacher Alan Questel to New York City for this special two-day public workshop.  Did you ever think it could be a challenge for you to have more pleasure in your life? Or could you imagine experiencing greater pleasure when you are faced with a challenge? Pleasure and challenge, experiences that are too often exclusive of each other, will be the focus of this two-day workshop.

 

Utilizing Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons you will safely and enjoyably inquire into your own process. The result will be an enhancement of your understanding of what you feel, how you relate and how you respond to the challenge of finding more pleasure in your life and the pleasure of meeting a challenge.

 

The themes of pleasure and challenge will be explored through movement...making the abstract concrete and giving you an embodied experience of these ideas, not only a cognitive understanding.  It is through movement that you will come to a different understanding of yourself in relation to these ideas.  Of course, there will be some challenge...but an appropriate level for you.  No demands will be made on you that are beyond your ability and I will be there to further adapt the lessons, if need be, to suit you in a way that you can 'succeed' and find pleasure in the processes.  We'll do 3-4 ATMs a day.

Our ATM Classes Are More
Than They Might Seem... 

 

The faculty of the Feldenkrais Institute gets together once a week to talk over various things that have to do with our business and with the Feldenkrais Method, in general. Lately, we've been sharing a lot about what each of us is teaching during ATM class. Below are brief explanations of what some of our teachers are exploring in their classes. We'll update you from time to time and add more from other teachers as the information comes in. 

 

Beginner Classes: Monday, 11:15 am, Wednesday, 5:30 pm and Saturday, 12:30 pm. The beginner series is a rotation of 12 ATM exercises, each of which is designed to illuminate a basic movement pattern that will be encountered in different variations in other ATM exercises. Lisa, Belinda and Mark explain the basic "rules" that should be followed to derive the greatest benefit when doing any ATM exercise. Further, in the beginner classes, more detailed explanation is offered of the guiding principles that underlie the Feldenkrais Method. We recommend that newcomers attend at least three beginner level classes before moving on to open and intermediate level classes but all are welcome to attend, regardless of experience with the Feldenkrais Method.

 

Monday, 12:30 pm -- During May, Marek began a series that highlights feeling more upright. By activating and bringing attention to the extensor muscles of the back, we remember what it's like to be effortlessly erect with an open chest and a more luxuriant sense of equilibrium throughout the skeleton. Enhancing the ease of standing tall translates into a sense of integration and well-being that permeates our entire system.

 

Tuesday, 12:30 pm, Thursday, 12:30 pm (Intermediate Level) - Dayana is working with the idea of self-reliance. Among other things, her lessons include self touch, moving oneself, and using the hands as a vehicle to increase awareness and bring movement to those areas that are out of most people's voluntary control. In this way, Dayana helps her students discover and develop tools they can use to "heal themselves", improve, feel better, relieve pain, etc. In this way, she encourages her students to develop their own tool box or medicine cabinet that includes a repertoire of ATMs. Dayana includes lots of explanation of the structure of each exercise and why movements are included so her students can better remember the exercises. The exercises can then be pulled from the student's self-crafted toolbox to be done at any time--at home, during work or study breaks, while waiting for the subway, or in their imagination.

 

Wednesday, 12:30 pm - Mark will teach a series of lessons that will explore in detail the efficient use of the pelvis and its attached large muscles (including your "core"), to help the rest of yourself find more effortless movement. The series will involve transitioning from one position to another--coming to sit from lying on the stomach, several variations of coming to sit from lying on the back, coming to stand from sitting, and coming up to stand directly from lying on the back. Instead of using muscle power to haul yourself from one position to the next, you'll learn how to effectively and easily use your mass to minimize muscular effort and make these transitions simply and easily.

 

Wednesday, 6:30 pm, Friday, 12;30 pm - Zo's off on vacation soon, but she's currently teaching lessons that place the accent on the ribs, chest and/or shoulders in service to finding greater freedom of the head and comfort in the neck.    

 

Thursday, 5:30 pm -- Mark will explore the sensory side of the Feldenkrais Method with a series of lessons that make concrete the integration of the subconscious motor control system and conscious awareness. These lessons will illuminate how physical change manifests in sensory awareness and that knowledge will add to every ATM lesson you do from now on.

Pain-Free Knees, Healthy Ankles

Part II 
 

 

Healthy knees and ankles are essential for ease in walking, climbing stairs, even moving from sitting to standing. The manner in which weight passes through knees and ankles and the resulting pressure on the joints can vary widely from person to person. Inefficiencies in the distribution or transfer of weight can lead to many common knee and ankle problems-including osteoarthritis, torn menisci, ligament strains, fallen arches and sprained ankles. If you experience knee or ankle pain or have done so in the past, or if you simply want to improve the comfort and stamina of your legs, this workshop is for you. 

On Tuesday evening, June 5th and all day Saturday, June 30th, Mark will teach two related workshops to help you promote and restore strength, flexibility and dependability to your knees and ankles. You'll discover how the flexibility of your ankles can improve the functioning of your knees. Through easy to do exercises, you'll develop a greater sense of the ways in which you use your knees and ankles, in order to improve the ease and comfort of every day movements like sitting, standing, getting out of bed, turning and reaching. 

You can take either of the workshops separately, but your experience will be much richer if you attend both. 

These workshops will help you learn:  

  • How to align your feet and ankles to keep your knees pain-free and improve your balance.
  • How your knees influence the freedom and flexibility of your lower back.
