Greetings! I would like to apologize to ATRA members for the slow pace this year. We are behind in board elections and this is delaying some important decision-making. Nonetheless we are participating strongly in an ASCE conference (see below) and helping to get Podcar City moving - it is shaping up to be a great conference to be held in the Bay Area of San Francisco this year. I am off on yet another overseas PRT-related business trip and trust we can wrap up the board elections and have a board meeting very soon after my return at the end of the month.

My Take on the Current State of Automated Transit Networks

For the past five years, ATNs have been eclipsed by two different hype cycles (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hype_cycle). Driverless cars is one, and Transportation Network Companies (Uber, Lyft). These have been sucking the air out of the room for PRT and GRT. When cars have gotten so much easier to hail and will imminently be driving themselves, why bother building guideways? This has diverted a lot of the attention and resources which might otherwise have been directed towards ATNs.

Self-driving people mover makes its maiden trip at Brussels Airport

The self-driving people mover has clocked up its first few metres at Brussels Airport. Over the coming 3 days, the shuttle bus will perform several demo trips without passengers to test the technology in a real-life environment. These tests see De Lijn and Brussels Airport’s ambitious pilot project step up a gear. In 2021, the self-driving people mover will commute autonomously between the terminal and cargo business area and parking lots. “It’s set to become the showpiece of public transport in Flanders,” says Flemish Minister for Mobility, Ben Weyts. “Foreign visitors will instantly perceive us as an innovative region.”

Plans for a direct tram-train link to Glasgow airport have been branded “dead” by the leader of the city council.
Local politicians have been calling for a direct rail link between Glasgow city centre and its airport “as a matter of urgency”, but in January a shuttle pod system was proposed instead – which one Labour MP called a “betrayal of the city.”

Dubai is renowned for its blue-sky thinking, so it is no surprise that the emirate is planning to get another hi-tech venture off the ground.
Sky Pods – a high-speed cable car-style transport system – is being tested by the Roads and Transport Authority in partnership with creators Skywatch Greentech.
A new video gives travellers a glimpse into the future by showing the new technology. It shows the sky pods passing landmarks such as the DIFC and the Museum of the Future.
