May 2019
From the President
Greetings! I would like to apologize to ATRA members for the slow pace this year. We are behind in board elections and this is delaying some important decision-making. Nonetheless we are participating strongly in an ASCE conference (see below) and helping to get Podcar City moving - it is shaping up to be a great conference to be held in the Bay Area of San Francisco this year. I am off on yet another overseas PRT-related business trip and trust we can wrap up the board elections and have a board meeting very soon after my return at the end of the month.
Following is a list of seven papers being presented by ATRA members at the ASCE’s International Conference on Transportation Development 2019 in Alexandria, VA:

June 10, 1:30 PM
Mobility Trends, Automation and the Future of Transit, Matthew Lesh
Some 21st Century Transportation Solutions, Peter Muller

June 10, 3:30 PM
New Energy for Resiliency in Rail and Public Transportation, Shannon McDonald

June 11, 1:30 PM
Estimating Impacts of Automated Shuttles, Gary Hsueh

My Take on the Current State of Automated Transit Networks
By ATRA Member, Nathan Koren

For the past five years, ATNs have been eclipsed by two different hype cycles (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hype_cycle). Driverless cars is one, and Transportation Network Companies (Uber, Lyft). These have been sucking the air out of the room for PRT and GRT. When cars have gotten so much easier to hail and will imminently be driving themselves, why bother building guideways? This has diverted a lot of the attention and resources which might otherwise have been directed towards ATNs.

A Metromover stop in South Beach? Pricey transit options on table for ‘baylink’ fix
from Miami to South Beach takes twice as long as it would to drive, and providing a better transit option could cost a billion dollars or more.

The quest for some sort of modern mass transit line between Miami and Miami Beach dates back to when Ronald Reagan was president, when the first “baylink” study was completed in 1988. The latest effort launched two summers ago as part of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit study — best known as .

Self-driving people mover makes its maiden trip at Brussels Airport
The self-driving people mover has clocked up its first few metres at Brussels Airport. Over the coming 3 days, the shuttle bus will perform several demo trips without passengers to test the technology in a real-life environment. These tests see De Lijn and Brussels Airport’s ambitious pilot project step up a gear. In 2021, the self-driving people mover will commute autonomously between the terminal and cargo business area and parking lots. “It’s set to become the showpiece of public transport in Flanders,” says Flemish Minister for Mobility, Ben Weyts. “Foreign visitors will instantly perceive us as an innovative region.”

Connecting Glasgow Airport - how the different transport options match up
Transport to and from Glasgow Airport has been a long running issue for Glaswegians and for the council.

Glasgow Airport’s tram-train link is ‘dead’ with shuttle pod system preferred
Plans for a direct tram-train link to Glasgow airport have been branded “dead” by the leader of the city council.

Local politicians have been calling for a direct rail link between Glasgow city centre and its airport “as a matter of urgency”, but in January a shuttle pod system was proposed instead – which one Labour MP called a “betrayal of the city.”

New video offers a glimpse of Dubai's futuristic Sky Pods transport system
Dubai is renowned for its blue-sky thinking, so it is no surprise that the emirate is planning to get another hi-tech venture off the ground.

Sky Pods – a high-speed cable car-style transport system – is being tested by the Roads and Transport Authority in partnership with creators Skywatch Greentech.

A new video gives travellers a glimpse into the future by showing the new technology. It shows the sky pods passing landmarks such as the DIFC and the Museum of the Future.

The very small guideway depicted in this slick video (looks like not much more than a cable) helps indicate this is just "Powerpoint technology"
