October 2018
From the President
Greetings! Yesterday I read this fascinating article about a car-free city in Spain. All they need to make it perfect is more peripheral parking and better transit. I don’t know about the parking, but we could sure help with the transit!

By the way, when I read this long article on my phone, I see it all. On my computer I see an abridged version. I think it will be worth your while to seek it all.

We developed this animation of how a personal rapid transit station could operate in a way that encourages ride-sharing. Please "like" it (if indeed you do).
As always, enjoy reading!

Best regards,
Peter Muller, ATRA President

The Fourth Martin Lowson Paper Award at the Podcar City Conference, Gavle, Sweden
The fourth Martin Lowson Award, is given in honor of the inventor of the first modern PRT system, and encourages young researchers to perform high quality research in the field of Automated Transit Systems (ATN). This year the award has been presented to Ing.Jessaï Arakelian-von Freeden for his Master thesis entitled ”The feasibility and benefits of introducing an autonomous minibus on-demand system in rural public transport: A simulation-based analysis”.

Remote Driving over 5G Networks can Support Automated Transit Systems
Automated Vehicles (AVs) have successfully operated on roadways along with conventional traffic in certain limited situations. However, widespread deployment of AVs will require them to operate over routes that include difficult sections, such as left turns across oncoming traffic. They will also have to deal with unplanned events, such as following the directions of a police officer in maneuvering around an accident scene. Fortunately, 5G mobile networks are becoming available that make it practical for a remote human driver to control an AV in situations that its on-board control system cannot handle.

Reliance aims to pilot personal rapid transit systems based on magnetic levitation in India
Imagine travelling in a magnetically levitating two-people pod, above the bustling city traffic, without the hustle of daily commute, pollution and frustration. This futuristic way of travel could soon become a reality in India thanks to Reliance Industries’ (RIL) strategic investment in US-based personal rapid transit company SkyTran.

ON YOUR OWN IN THE ASPHALT JUNGLE
Most still drive in demarcated areas, in public transport only with a competent co-driver on board, although they generally manage well on their own. We are talking about highly automated shuttle buses or trucks that are constantly expanding their autonomy – function by function. 2getthere, a pioneer in autonomous passenger shuttles based in the Netherlands, has now signed a contract to change this.
