36 Churches Together: Be Represented!

From the Desk
of the AMS

by Russell Lyle

It is getting to be that time again when churches will be filling out their ACR (Annual Church Report). While the ACR does not tell us everything about the health of the church (in fact, some churches may look very healthy on paper and in reality, be dying, and others may not look great on the ACR and be in a time of growth), the ACR does provide a roadmap to see where the church has been and where it is going.

The ACR also reminds us of one of the underappreciated and yet important roles in the church, and that it the church clerk.  A good church clerk serves a vital function for the church. The clerk is the official keeper and maintainer of church records. The clerk keeps the official record of church business meetings, which is important for legal and financial reasons. The clerk has the record of the will of the church regarding how money is to be spent by the church, and who is authorized to spend it. The clerk will keep the record of the will of the church regarding disposition, use, and maintenance of property. A good church clerk will keep a record of membership which is important to determine who is able to vote on church business. As the keeper of the official church record, the clerk’s work is vital to maintain the history of the church.

Praise the Lord for the many gifted clerks with which he has blessed his church. Often their vital work goes unnoticed, but a good clerk is a valuable asset to the church. The Middle Baptist Association exists to support our churches and our church clerks.
