This year for National Recreation and Parks Association’s (NRPA) Park and Recreation Month, recreation departments are celebrating The Power Of campaign nationally. Parks and Recreation has the power to bring together people, strengthen health and build more inclusive communities. For the WAWM RCS Department, we see The Power Of recreation every single day and today we’re highlighting The Power Of Inclusion as we celebrate Park and Recreation Month. Stay tuned for more featured articles this upcoming year as we focus on The Power Of recreation and how it impacts our department.
Parks and recreation are about more than programs and places—they're about creating spaces where everyone feels welcomed, valued and connected. Inclusion means ensuring every individual, regardless of ability, background or age, has the opportunity to participate, build friendships and experience the joy of belonging. When everyone has a place to play, learn and belong, our community grows stronger together. Let’s take a moment to talk with our Adaptive Recreation Manager Katie Lindgren about The Power of Inclusion.
A typical weekday here at the WAWM Recreation Center starts with the hustle and bustle of the morning. Senior Morning Stretch participants are entering for class, Preschool students and their parents are running down the hall excited for class, and our Adult Day Program participants stop to say hello to our front desk staff before heading to their program location for the day.
Our Day Program is nothing new for our department. It has been a hidden gem in our community, proudly serving adults from the disability community since 1968. The WAWM RCS Department has continued to grow to serve the needs of participants in our Recreational Adult Day Program, or as we lovingly call it, RAD. This program began because of the advocacy of families and caregivers, and it continues to evolve through the inspiration and influence of our participants in the program.

We’re currently looking for vendors to join. This is a great opportunity to clean out your clutter, showcase handmade items, promote your small business, or connect with local shoppers in the community. Your vendor registration fee will be donated to our Champion For a Child Scholarship Fund, helping support children in our community participate in before and afterschool care and youth sports. Space is limited, so reserve your spot early!

Join us for the 5th Annual Disability & Accessibility Resource Fair on October 13 from 5-7pm at the Recreation Center. This is an event dedicated to connection, inclusion and community support! This free event is designed to help parents, caregivers and individuals discover the wide range of resources available throughout Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties. Whether you’re seeking support for a child with a disability, an adult looking for community-based programs, or a caregiver hoping to build your resource network-this fair is for you!
Organizations that provide services for individuals with disabilities are encouraged to participate as vendors. To reserve a spot or learn more, please contact Katie Lindgren, Program Manager, at lindgrenk@wawmsd.org or 414-604-4935.

You’re invited to our new entertainment series where we will have a variety of musical performances. Our first one this summer will be with Matt Tyner, a self-taught musician, singing and playing guitar. His influences include the Blues great Muddy Waters, Alt-Americana legend Tom Waits, Rock n’ Roll’s elite Rolling Stones and Classic Country hero Hank Williams, Sr. He even is accompanied by his dog, Don Juan at his shows! Bring a chair or blanket!

Join us for the day as we travel to Warrens, Wisconsin to experience the 53rd Annual Cranberry Festival on September 26 from 8am-8pm. Check out the many attractions, including 800 arts and craft booths, 300 flea market booths, and 100 farmers market vendors. There are a number of food courts showcasing delicious foods to tempt anyone’s taste buds, including deep fried cranberries on a stick, cranberry cream puffs and chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick. Self-guided marsh tours are available
with a cranberry grower who can answer your questions. Come for the fun, stay for the cranberries! FEE: $80 RES/$120 NR
