Alberta Municipal Affairs has launched a short engagement process on potential amendments to the
Local Authorities Election Act aimed to bring rules for local elections closer in line with those for provincial elections. Municipalities are encouraged to review the positions AUMA members adopted at the 2016 AUMA Convention and provide their input to the province by July 31.
The Minister of Municipal Affairs has approved anew regulation that formally enables municipalities to create municipally-controlled corporations without ministerial approval that aligns with AUMA advocacy for greater municipal autonomy.

On June 1, 2018, the new Occupational Health and Safety Act, SA 2017 c O-2.1, came into force. This Act is a substantial revision to the occupational health and safety requirements in Alberta and there are corresponding amendments to the associated Code and Regulation.
