In the 2017 federal budget, the federal government eliminated the one-third tax exemption for provincial and municipal elected officials. The change comes into effect on January 1, 2019. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and AUMA have developed guidance documents to help municipalities manage this change.
November 1-7 is Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week in Alberta. With second (or third?) winter creeping in and heating season is in full swing, it’s time to remind Albertans to protect their homes

In life - and in the municipal world - working with your neighbours is not always easy. If done right, it can provide major benefits.
The EOEP’s
Regional Partnerships and Collaboration course will provide participants with an opportunity to learn about required collaborative tools such as intermunicipal collaboration frameworks, as well as other approaches municipalities can take to build meaningful partnerships with their municipal neighbours in a way that is fair and mutually beneficial.
If you’re interested in how your municipality can transform collaboration from a requirement to an opportunity, sign up for
Regional Partnerships and Collaboration taking place November 1 in Okotoks by contacting
registrar@eoep.ca.
One of the most publicized aspects of the new Employment Standards Code was the minimum wage increases. A less publicized but equally significant change to the Code was the introduction of new unpaid job-protected leaves for employees. Employers do not have to pay the employee their wages or benefits while the employee is on leave unless the employment agreement (or collective agreement, if a union environment) requires otherwise. However, employers are not permitted to terminate or lay off an employee for requesting or taking one of the available leaves.
