AUMA is pleased to see that its advocacy has had an impact and the Government of Alberta is not proceeding at this time with it's proposed changes to the administration of agreements that Alberta public agencies and municipalities have with the Government of Canada.

On June 23, the Minister of Municipal Affairs introduced Bill 29, the Local Authorities Election Amendment Act, 2020.

Advocacy efforts this week have been focused on the response to the Fair Deal Panel, pending amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act and federal/provincial pandemic support and recovery efforts.
AUMA is seeking nominations of qualified candidates to serve on its Board of Directors. View the candidate nomination package and review the guidelines for determining an individual’s candidacy, as well as the relevant nomination forms and submission instructions.

On June19, the Government of Alberta announced $200 million in grants to municipalities across the province to upgrade local infrastructure projects. AUMA looks forward to further announcements about urgently-needed operating deficit funding from the provincial and federal governments.

The AUMA Board of Directors approved an RFD calling on the province to streamline the approval process for water and wastewater projects.

The AUMA Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place the morning of Thursday, September 24, 2020. The AGM will be held in conjunction with the annual AUMA Convention.

Jeff Henwood, AUMA Director, Government Relations
Jeff Henwood joined AUMA on June 17 as the Director, Government Relations. Jeff was most recently the Acting Executive Director for the United Conservative Party and has spent most of his professional life in the political arena. As part of the Advocacy team, Jeff’s role at AUMA will include preparing and strategizing for engagement efforts with government officials and providing a political lens to advocacy and outreach initiatives. He is happy to answer questions from members and stakeholders on the government’s approach to public policy matters and how to best engage provincial officials to achieve desired outcomes. AUMA has received clarity from the province regarding weekend slo-pitch tournaments, which are a prolific summer tradition and revenue generator in municipalities across the province.
Did you know that there are anywhere from 16,000 to 81,000 LGBTQ2S+ older adults in Alberta today? To better support the LGTBQ2S+ community, organizations can check out Aging with Pride, a new guide by the Government of Alberta on how to create inclusive services for older adults that identify as LGBTQ2S+.

The Alberta Water Council (AWC) released the Protecting Sources of Drinking Water in Alberta Guide and Companion Document. The guide focuses on the quality of surface and groundwater supplies while recognizing that quality and quantity are related. AUMA is a member of the AWC Board of Directors and was part of the project team that supported the development of the guide.

Alberta Culture Days celebrations take place September 1 to 30. Communities and organizations can apply for grants to put on events that help build partnerships, showcase homegrown talent, and boost existing cultural programs. This year, Alberta Culture Days grants will support online and small venue events. Applications close July 16, 2020. More information and application forms can be found at AlbertaCultureDays.ca.

Green Municipal Fund’s Community Efficiency Financing initiative to open June 30

On June 11, 2020, the Government of Alberta announced the winding down of Energy Efficiency Alberta (EEA). Over the next 90 days, the MCCAC will work closely with the Province and EEA to assume responsibility for the Clean Energy Improvement Program. Learn more.

Join the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on June 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to learn about how you can successfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and restore sites to productive use. You’ll also learn about FCM’s funding programs.

Join the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on June 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to learn about how to create or scale up innovative financing programs that enable higher energy performance and lower GHG emissions in low-rise residential homes. The next call for applications for the Green Municipal Fund’s Community Efficiency Financing initiative will open June 30. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the funding opportunities available to support feasibility and design work for future municipal financing programs for home energy upgrades.
