Message from the President 

We’re into the second week of the provincial election campaign. This week, I want to highlight the importance of infrastructure funding for our communities. This has been a key issue for our members for years and a large focus of AUMA’s advocacy work with both the provincial and federal governments. 


The Minister of Municipal Affairs approved the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) Deficit Elimination Transitional Regulation regarding deficits carried over from the 2017 general election and by-elections.

Casual Legal Article: The “costs” of doing litigation
A recent Court of Appeal decision helpfully summarized the law on awarding costs at the end of litigation. As a rule, a successful party in litigation is entitled to an award of costs from the unsuccessful party. However, the decision to award costs and the amount of the costs is discretionary and a judge may vary from the normal rule based on a wide number of factors.
