Winston-Salem, NC's Innovation Quarter has announced a new master plan for the second major phase of development in the innovation district. Featuring 10 proposed buildings and 2.7 million total square feet, the new phase of development will feature the same mixed-use, ground-level activation found in the existing district. Innovation Quarter anticipates Wexford Science + Technology, a major partner in Phase I and a global leader in developing communities that drive innovation, to play a major role in the final design and development of Phase II. Since 2010, the Innovation Quarter has partnered with Wexford Science + Technology to transform this section of downtown Winston-Salem into a thriving innovation district. Read more
Huntsville, AL's Cummings Research Park (CRP) recently celebrated Teledyne Brown Engineering's (TBE) major expansion in the CRP campus. Earlier this month, TBE held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the latest addition to its Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence at CRP. This is the third in a series of expansions (adding more than 140,000 square feet) to have occurred in the past 3 years to support the company's growth. TBE's Large-Scale, High Bay, Assembly and Integration Facility totals 40,000 square feet, supporting work for TBE's Department of Defense, NASA, and Department of Energy customers. Read more.
The US Economic Development Administration (EDA) has launched its $1 billion "Build Back Better Regional Challenge" that aims to provide a transformational investment to 20-30 regions across the country that want to revitalize their economies. 

Among the eligible entities that may apply include: a) institutions of higher education or a consortium of institutions of higher education and b) public or private non-profit organizations or associations acting in cooperation with officials of a political subdivision of a State. There are two distinct program phases with key deadlines to note:

  • Phase 1 deadline is October 19, 2021
  • Phase 2 deadline is March 15, 2022

Since the Nebraska Innovation Studio (NIS) opened its doors in 2015 on the Nebraska Innovation Campus, the makerspace has continued to retool and expand its offerings, becoming one of the best facilities of its kind in the U.S. The metamorphosis of the NIS was celebrated with a grand reopening event earlier this month. When NIS opened six years ago, the studio space boasted a laser cutter, two 3D printers, table saw, band saw, CNC router, workbenches, hand tools, screen printing station, vinyl cutter, throwing wheels and a kiln. Since then, private donations have allowed for added capabilities, including a wood shop, metal-working shop, four additional lasers, eight more 3D printers and an embroidery machine. Soon, the studio will add a 44-inch Canon photo printer and additional photo software. Read more.

A Louisiana technology startup, Tigeraire, that is a resident company with LSU Innovation Park, has raised more than $1.5 million from investors for its cooler, more comfortable football helmets. As part of this, Tigeraire has already won deals from major college football programs including LSU, Alabama and Clemson. The company has expanded to 25 employees, most of whom work in its LSU Innovation Park offices. The startup raised $1.5 million from investors for its seed round in December 2020, led by General Catalyst, a Massachusetts venture capital firm that has invested in Venmo, Airbnb and TikTok. In addition to football helmets, Tigeraire is expanding its product line to include hard hats for the industrial and construction sectors. Read more.

The Washington Business Journal has published a column by #AURP CEO Brian Darmody on "Viewpoint: Ready for an HQ2 redux? It's time to come together for new regional tech collaboration." In the column, Brian writes about the U.S. EDA's $1 billion "Build Back Better Regional Challenge," which aims to provide transformational investments to 50-60 regions across the U.S. that want to revitalize their economies.

The Phase 1 deadline is October 19, 2021. "The clock is ticking on the Oct. 19 planning grants EDA deadline. Real estate developers should be working with local universities and economic development groups to plan strategies now," writes Brian. Read more.
