AURP: "Great to see you, Ann, last month in Delaware at #AURP2023. What are some new research and innovation developments at South Dakota Mines?"
Ann Brentlinger: "Our community was awarded a Tech Hub Strategy Development Grant for the Black Hills Deep Underground Frontier, focused on furthering autonomous mining equipment and underground technologies and securing a supply chain for critical minerals.

Also, we recently opened the new CNAM-Bio Center, which will focus on developing bioproducts, like biodegradable plastics, from forestry and agriculture residues. And, we set a state high mark in 2022 for the number of issued patents (16) made to a state research institution in a single year."

The Bayh-Dole Coalition has opened nominations for its 2024 Bayh-Dole Coalition American Innovator Award. The American Innovator Award recognizes individuals who exemplify the determination and vision required to transform early-stage federally funded discoveries into real-world products that improve lives. Awardees will be profiled in the Bayh-Dole Coalition’s annual “Faces of American Innovation” report and honored during a congressional briefing and reception in Washington, D.C. Nominations will be accepted until February 5, 2024, at 10:00am ET. Read more. | |

Hillsborough County (FL) Seeks Master Developer for Land Surrounding Museum of Science and Industry Near the University of South Florida
The Board of Hillsborough County (FL) Commissioners has approved a Request for Proposal asking developers to submit their plans for the redevelopment of the 67-acre site surrounding the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), located near the University of South Florida (USF) campus. Hillsborough County is seeking creative and competitive proposals from experienced and qualified master developers with a track record of mixed urban projects. Submissions are due in late February 2024. The Board plans to select the top-ranked master developer in Summer 2024. Learn more.

Groundbreaking for the University of Michigan Center for Innovation (UCMI) takes place next month. Construction of the $250 million center in downtown Detroit is expected to take three years. “Our founding as a university traces back to Detroit, so it’s fitting that we reinvigorate and build on our commitment to the city through this center,” said U-M President Santa J. Ono. UMCI aims to be a world-class research, education and entrepreneurship center designed to advance innovation and talent-focused community development to propel city, regional and statewide job creation and inclusive economic growth by stimulating economic development in Detroit. The first-ever space science park on Earth may soon locate near the Ohio State University Airport. A 10-acre plot in NW Columbus has been set aside for development of a replica of the George Washington Carver Space Park, a lab currently operating on the International Space Station. Voyager announced last September that Ohio State, in partnership with the state of Ohio, JobsOhio and One Columbus, won a bid for the location of the company’s space park, Starlab Ground Location-US.
