AURP recognized as Stage One Awardee in U.S. SBA 2024 Growth Accelerator Fund Competition
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) this week announced AURP as a Stage One winner for the 2024 Growth Accelerator Fund Competition (GAFC).
AURP will receive a $50,000 cash prize for its impactful and inclusive approach to nurturing a collaborative national innovation ecosystem to advance small business research and development (R&D) from ideas to the market.

“AURP’s award winning model ‘RAIN’ (Rural Autonomous Innovation Network) will leverage our existing university members (our ecosystem partners - The RAIN Makers), plus supporting firms in rural EPSCOR states and rural areas," said Vickie Palmer, CEO of AURP. "Through AURP’s Air & Space Caucus, RAIN will support rural entrepreneurship programs on autonomous vehicles and robotics, both in land and sky, among our AURP members to help overcome the barriers small tech businesses in rural areas confront.”
By fostering connections between entrepreneurs, mentors, partners, philanthropies, corporations, investors and other shared resources, GAFC 2024 catalyzes strategic ecosystem partnerships to build community and organizational capacity for the successful launch, growth and scale of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-based entrepreneurs. AURP Wasn’t Eclipsed at the Federal Lab Consortium
The morning of Monday, April 8 dawned cloudy in Dallas for the FLC National eeting, but shortly after noon the clouds parted giving attendees a spectacular view of the full eclipse of the sun. AURP members and sponsors were well represented at the 50th anniversary of the FLC and its work connecting federal labs with academia and industry, such as AURP

member parks including Sandia Science & Technology Park, Idaho National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
AURP Chief Strategy Officer Brian Darmody led a panel with Ian Ryu of Fed Tech discussing the role of federal labs in building communities of innovation. AURP member Glen Gardner hosted a session for career development strategies for tech transfer professionals. The National Advisory Council for the FLC was introduced, which included AURP Past President Jackie Kerby Moore and AURP Annual Sponsor Astra Zeneca’s Gayatri Varma.
Andrew Maas, LSU AVP for Research who oversees the LSU Innovation Park, and incoming leader of the AUTM board was present plus Stephen Susalka, CEO for AUTM, who will be speaking on the importance of intellectual property at AURP's BIO Health Caucus, June 2-3, 2024, at Westin in San Diego, in conjunction with BIO.

Research Triangle Park veteran Linda Hall has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer with NCInnovation, a nonprofit organization that helps turn North Carolina’s university research breakthroughs into commercially viable solutions. Hall will be responsible for finance and accounting practices and performance, financial reporting and grant management, corporate development functions, and relationships with third-party investment manager. Gregory Herlong, VP and Market Executive with Baltimore-based Wexford Science & Technology, joined a panel at BisNow’s Mid-Atlantic Life Sciences & Biotech Summit to discuss Baltimore's ecosystem and Wexford’s new project at the UM BioPark, 4MLK, opening October 2024. |
Last week, AURP CEO Vickie Palmer toured toured UM BioPark with a hard-hat walk-through of the MLK4 building. Vickie noted this Wexford project with the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (both AURP members), "will transform this community providing a central site for the neighborhoods, university and industry leaders to connect." |
A highlight of the visit was visiting with Jane Shaab, UM BioPark Executive Director, Associate Vice President, Economic Development (and AURP 2023 Career Achievement Award recipient and Mary Morris, Baltimore Fund, University of Maryland, Baltimore (photo left).

Case Western Reserve University has redeveloped the former BioEnterprise Inc. building in University Circle into a new startup incubator for early-stage businesses in the biotech, health tech and engineering fields, according to ClevelandInno. The incubator is part of the Cleveland Innovation District, the public-private initiative that aims to invest in the city's health care, research and education institutions focusing on virus and pathogen innovation. The University of Illinois Research Park is now home to a new center for growth-stage life sciences startups. The Park held a celebration and ribbon cutting earlier this month, marking the opening of LabWorks and its first tenant, a graduate from the EnterpriseWorks incubator. LabWorks offers turn-key wet lab and office suites for growth-stage startup companies in the Research Park, enabling startups to establish roots and continue growing in the Champaign-Urbana community. The Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina commissioned HR&A Advisors (HR&A) to conduct a 2023 Economic Impact study to assess the economic and fiscal impacts of existing operations of Research Triangle Park (RTP) on its home counties (Durham County and Wake County) and the state of North Carolina. The study cites plans that "will shape how companies reimagine their campuses, enhance R&D efforts, meet new workforce demands and create inviting communities." Read more. | | |
In a move to accelerate physical, digital and sustainable manufacturing efforts across Indiana, Purdue University’s Manufacturing and Materials Research Laboratories (MMRL) will establish a presence in Indianapolis at 16 Tech Innovation District, the city’s destination for innovation and entrepreneurship. MMRL will locate in 16 Tech’s Machyne makerspace, the region’s leading makerspace for prototyping. MMRL collaborates with industries and foundations, accelerates tech commercialization in manufacturing, and attracts top talent. Read more. | | |
