Member News: VA's Tech Center Research Park Opens First of Ten Planned Buildings
The Tech Center Research Park, which is part of our member, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, has just opened its first of ten buildings comprising a major new research park in Newport News, VA.

The Tech Center Research Park's building will comprise 50 acres and be "part of larger, mixed-use campus that will include Marketplace at Tech Center, a 250,000-square-foot project with retail and restaurants, and Venture Apartments Tech Center, a 300,000-square-foot multifamily residential community," according to an article in Virginia Business.

Our congratulations to all involved in achieving this major milestone for Tech Center VA, including its Director, Jeff Johnson, who serves on AURP's Board of Directors.
Member News: LSU Innovation Park Cites Plan to Expand
Dave Winwood, Executive Director with AURP Member, the LSU Innovation Park, notes plans to expand the Innovation Park by "adding new roadway infrastructure to increase accessibility and developing another 150 acres of land to accommodate up to 75 new companies, creating a projected 2,100 jobs and spurring as much as $80 million in economic activity," according to an article in the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report. The article also mentions former AURP Board Member and Past President, Charlie D'Agostino, who retired last January as LSU Innovation Park's Executive Director.
Member News: VA Bio+Tech Park Startup Wins SBIR Funding
A medical device startup, Tympanogen, based at the VA Bio+Tech Park in Richmond, VA, was awarded a $1.48 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. This Direct-to-Phase II grant will support the regulatory testing needed to bring Tympanogen’s eardrum gel patch, called Perf-Fix, to market. Learn more.
University of Maryland to Open "Discovery Center" in Crystal City, VA
In a move to leverage Amazon's HQ2 location in Northern Virginia, the University of Maryland (UMD) announced yesterday it will open an 8,000-square-foot space in Crystal City, Virginia in fall 2020 to foster innovation and collaboration among UMD students and faculty, Crystal City residents, businesses and alumni in the area.

UMD's Crystal City-based "Discovery Center" will provide spaces for academics, local businesses and community residents to interact and exchange ideas. Learn more.
Aretian Releases Atlas of Innovation Districts
Aretian | Urban Analytics & Design, a startup at Harvard Innovation Labs, recently released its Atlas of Innovation Districts, an interactive map that enables users to "explore the secret recipe for sustainable economic growth through innovation ecosystems."

The map comprises data on 50 innovation districts across the US with a focus on "Innovation Intensity, Innovation Performance, and Innovation Impact." The report notes innovation districts "produce on average a 4x higher intensity of tangible innovations per employee, as well as a 9x higher density of job opportunities, a 15x higher concentration of knowledge-intensive jobs, and 20x more wealth or economic activity per resident." The CEO’s Corner – Brian Darmody
AURP CEO Brian Darmody, AURP President Dan Duncan and several AURP board members will take part in a timely workshop on "Innovation Districts and Research Parks in U-I Collaborations" at the UIDP29: Conference in Columbus, OH, Sept. 16-19.

Also at this conference, the AURP delegation will join a panel on "Landing an Innovation District: The National Landing/Amazon HQ2 Project in Greater Washington Region." In this session, attendees will hear from some of the principals involved in the Amazon HQ2 project going up in Northern Virginia as part of a major new development that includes a $1 billion new campus for Virginia Tech and other universities in the region including the University of Maryland.

Also, Brailsford & Dunlavey's Higher Ed P3 Resource Center recently posted a two-part Q&A with AURP's Brian Darmody on the background and nature of innovation districts and research parks. With B&D's Jessica Rosenberg, the first interview covers "Innovation Districts, Part 1: What and where are they? What role do P3s play in their Development?" And the second interview, just posted last week, is a continuation of their Part 1 Q&A discussion.
