Adam Courtney: "KU Innovation Park, the commercialization partner of the University of Kansas, recently opened a 66,000-square-foot expansion facility, Phase III of a transformative plan for regional economic development in Lawrence, Kan. Coupled with an adjacent mixed-use development featuring retail, dining and living space, the Park, celebrating 15 years of operations in 2023, is focused on being at the center of industry and academia."

Congratulations to Haley Bejarano, AURP Association Administrator! Haley is graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Technology with a minor in Business Administration from the University of Arizona. "I pursued this degree because I discovered my passion for both data analysis and business administration in my previous job along with exploring further into U of A’s computer science and technology degrees. I can’t wait to further apply my skills from my degree and continue to grow my knowledge in business administration with the AURP Team." Our Congratulations again Haley!
A new NSF program, BioFoundries to Enable Access to Infrastructure and Resources for Advancing Modern Biology and Biotechnology (BioFoundries), calls for proposals to: develop scientific ecosystems that democratize access to modern infrastructure, reagents, processes and knowledge bases; facilitate pathways to translation; and engage in education and training efforts and conduct novel internal research. This NSF effort aims to spur innovation that advances biotechnologies, biomanufacturing and the bioeconomy. Letters of Intent are required to be submitted by August 1, 2023. Read more.
Kate Engel has been named interim Executive Director of Nebraska Innovation Campus, taking over from Dan Duncan, NIC's longtime Executive Director and Past AURP President. Engel joined the NIC team in 2011 to assist with establishing operations and marketing before the NIC's 2012 groundbreaking. Most recently, Engel was director of strategic partnerships and communications, assisting with recruitment and retention, additional marketing and public relations efforts, space buildouts, workforce development, and resources and programs for NIC’s 65 private- and public-sector partners. Arrowhead Park, New Mexico State University (NMSU), and Doña Ana Community College have broken ground on its joint Creative Campus initiative, a broad-based collaboration in Southern New Mexico that focuses on the workforce, economic and community development potential of the film and digital media industries. The Creative Campus will be a state-of-the-art digital media complex where academia, industry and entrepreneurship work together to develop next-generation talent, produce world-class digital content and generate significant economic growth in the region. The Ohio State University recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new Pelotonia Research Center led by university leaders, researchers, representatives from Pelotonia and Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. The Pelotonia Research Center is the first new building to open at Carmenton, Ohio State's innovation district. This five-story, 305,000-square-foot laboratory building is equipped for researchers to focus on cancer, gene and cell-based therapies, cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine, neurological disease, microbiome, food systems and health, artificial intelligence and sensory biology. Elizabeth “Betsy” R. Cantwell, PhD, currently Senior Vice President for Research & Innovation at the University of Arizona (UA), has been named the 17th president of Utah State University. At UA, Cantwell has been responsible for an $825 million annual research portfolio, with responsibilities for the 1,268-acre UA Tech Parks. The UA Tech Parks contribute $1.7 billion annually to the regional economy. Cantwell is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School (MBA); the University of California, Berkeley (PhD, Mechanical Engineering); and the University of Chicago (BA, Human Behavior). The University of Kentucky, as lead organization with partners across Kentucky and Tennessee, has been awarded $1 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, program. This team’s proposal, “Advancing carbon centric circular economy technologies for advanced manufacturing solutions (KY, TN),” is led by a coalition named Generate Advanced Manufacturing Excellence for Change (GAME Change). UK is home to the Coldstream Research Campus. Read more.
Albuquerque's Technology Leadership High School – a public charter high school located on the Sandia Science & Technology Park (SS&TP) campus – just celebrated its fifth graduation with 59 seniors. The school – which focuses on the academic, social and emotional growth of underserved youth – opened in the SS&TP in August 2015 with 90 students, and now has more than 300 students. Over the last eight years, the school has built collaborations with and received support from SS&TP companies, organizations and partners, plus Sandia National Laboratories. Read more.
The Partners for Innovation, Ventures, Outreach & Technology (PIVOT) Center at the University of Utah (host of AURP's 2021 International Conference) has named Bruce Hunter its Interim Chief Innovation and Economic Engagement Officer. Hunter takes over from Dr. Keith Marmer, who served as a leader for the university’s technology and innovation engine since 2016. Hunter received his BA, MBA and JD from the University of Iowa. From there, he founded a computer imaging company at the university’s incubator, ran it for over 10 years, and sold it to a publicly-traded market leader. Read more.
Blue Origin, an aerospace company owned by Jeff Bezos, is planning a third major expansion in Huntsville, AL in the last three years. The company’s Huntsville presence already features a rocket building plant in Cummings Research Park, including a 400,000 square-foot facility that opened in 2020. Blue Origin announced a 200,000 square foot expansion last year that’s nearing completion. With its new land purchase in Huntsville, Blue Origin aims to build another 400,000 square-foot building, giving the company about one million total square feet in Huntsville. Read more.
#AURPinAction: Over 700 people attended the Greater Baltimore Committee's annual meeting last month at Baltimore Peninsula, home to Under Armour (UA) Headquarters and new innovation spaces. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, UA Founder Kevin Plank and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott attended. Also in attendance were representatives of AURP DC area headquarters: AURP's Brian Darmody; UM BioPark (UM BioPark's Mary Morris in photo right), bwtech@UMBC; UMD's Discovery District; Ayers Saint Gross; Fulton Bank; Whiting-Turner; and Maryland Department Commerce.
