AURP's Day at the Beach!
The dog days of summer gathered 3,000 state and government officials and county economic development representatives at Ocean City, MD for the annual Maryland Association of Counties (MACO) Summer Conference.
AURP was on fire with AURP members Tammi Thomas, representing AURP sponsor TEDCO and Laura Fritts, Office of Economic Opportunity, Frederick County, MD. Tammi discussed the way TEDCO supports small tech businesses that are tenants in incubators and Laura presented on the Frederick Innovative Technology Center. Tying this together was AURP Chief Strategy Officer Brian Darmody, on the role counties have in developing tech incubators and innovation districts in their jurisdictions. Darmody reviewed the Maryland counties that support AURP innovation districts including Prince George’s, Montgomery County, Saint Mary’s, Baltimore and Baltimore City.
| |
|
After-hours included a "spirited" debate concerning the relative merits of an "Orange Crush," a vodka-orange juice summer favorite drink invented in Ocean City, but somehow claimed as Delaware’s Official State Drink under legislation just passed in that state.
Who knows? Perhaps an informal "Crush Off" in Bentonville, AR by representatives of the two states needs to settle this . . . Stay tuned and yet another reason to sign up now for AURP's 2024 International Conference hosted by the University of Arkansas (Nov. 11-14).

The Boeing Center at Tech Port showcases featured entertainment, Google Arts & Talent Museum, Area 21 preparing next-gen innovators, and more, plus adjacent land is under consideration for the development of the Air Force Cyber Campus forecasted to bring in an additional 18,000 jobs in the area. The Port is advancing plans to construct a vertiport — a state-of-the-art facility next to its industrial airport at Kelly Field that will be able to host traditional fixed-wing aircraft alongside landing pads where, in the not-too-distant future, people will be able to board eVTOLs as part of mass transit systems that will take them to various destinations in the region. With so many current and planned programming and development initiatives, Tech Port San Antonio is eager to connect with and dialogue with our AURP network.
Following discussions with the Tech Port SA team, adventures continued at STAR Park and Texas State University in San Marcos. Guided by AURP Past President, Harold Strong, Jr., Executive Director of STAR Park, he shared tenant company advancements including Group1, a leader in advanced battery technology’s recent announcement of the world's first Potassium-ion battery (KIB) in the cylindrical form factor. Group1's KIB technology offers a sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective solution, free from critical minerals like nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium. Additional highlight included Texas State University’s partnership with Concept Companies, to develop a life sciences incubator at TXST’s Round Rock Campus, focusing on R&D advancements in the life sciences and medical fields.
#TeamAURP looks forward to future visits to AURP member communities. I hope to arrange our next visit soon.
