AURP Releases White Paper on History of Research Parks / Innovation Districts and Relevance to CHIPS and Science Act | |

With a robust array of new federal policies supporting innovation and tech-based economic development, expanding the impact and reach of university-based research parks and innovation districts across the U.S. is vital in fueling the nation’s economic growth and global competitiveness, according to a new white paper from AURP.
AURP’s white paper, The History of Research Parks and Their Evolution into Innovation Districts: Exploring U.S. Federal Support for Creating Communities of Innovation, notes the history of development of research parks begins with Stanford Research Park, founded in 1951.

Since that time, the research park model has spread across the U.S. and then globally as more communities devoted resources into research parks and innovation districts sponsored by universities, government labs, hospital systems and cities, often with support from national governments. U.S. EDA has announced the receipt of hundreds of applications for Phase 1 of its Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs) competition. From the program’s launch on May 12, 2023 (through application closing deadline on August 15, 2023), 378 applications were received from 247 unique lead consortia members: In total, 48 states and 3 territories submitted Tech Hubs Phase 1 applications. The University of Utah's PIVOT Center (which joined in hosting AURP's 2021 International Conference with UUtah Research Park) has played a key role in assisting two leading university researchers spin-out their life sciences company, 3Helix. The PIVOT Center helped in the initial patenting of foundational technology and continues to offer guidance and support to the company. Read more. | | |
A $46 million grant from the NIH's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will support translational science programs over the next five to seven years at eight San Antonio-area institutions, led by UT Health San Antonio. The goal is to reduce health disparities among Mexican Americans, active military personnel and veterans. This is the fourth time UT Health San Antonio has been selected to receive a multi-million dollar NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award since 2008. Read more. | | |
Investigators with the University of Kentucky received a record $479.3 million in extramural grants and contracts to support their research in fiscal year (FY) 2023. This is a 5.8% increase from the $452.9 million in FY 2022 research awards. UK researchers also in FY23 notched record highs in these three categories: 1,877 research awards to 837 principal investigators from a 621 sponsors. Industry-sponsored research grew by 9.6% from $25.6 million in FY22 to $28.1 million in FY23. UK is home to the Coldstream Research Campus. Read more. | | |

The Michigan State University Research Foundation (MSU Research Foundation) has announced an $11.8 million grant funding commitment to Michigan State University for the upcoming 2023-2024 fiscal year. This annual grant surpasses the previous year's allocation of $10.8 million and will play a key role in supporting various programs at the university. "Our annual grant to Michigan State is a core pillar of our mission at the Foundation," said David Washburn, Executive Director of the MSU Research Foundation. Read more. | | | |
