Member News: Joe Meredith, PhD, Named President Emeritus by VA Tech Foundation
Joe Meredith, PhD, former President and CEO of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, has been conferred the title of President Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Foundation (VTF).

"Emeritus status is the highest honor bestowed by the foundation’s Board of Directors to a retired employee," Sandra C. Davis, chair of the VTF Board said. “For 27 years, Dr. Joe Meredith led the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center with great distinction. In many ways, through the VTCRC, he helped create and define the character of a contemporary university-based research park and his leadership is widely respected across the country. The Virginia Tech Foundation is pleased to recognize his work through this honorary title.” Read more.
Member News: Memorial Tribute
to Gary Fowler, 65
Gary Alan Fowler, who was a leading architect globally and a vital part of Atlanta's research and technology community, passed away October 18. Gary was Director of Design for Collaborative Real Estate for the last decade where he oversaw the design of many facilities at Georgia Tech's Tech Square in Midtown Atlanta as well as those at universities around the country.

He attended the Tulane School of Architecture on academic scholarship, receiving both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture. Gary began his architectural career at tvsdesign (or TVS as it was previously known).

Industry News: STAT Launches
Biomedical Discovery Contest
STAT has announced the launch of its fifth annual STAT Madness competition, in which universities, medical schools and nonprofit research institutions compete for recognition that they have produced the "most exciting biomedical discovery or innovation of the past year."

As STAT notes, this is a contest in two parts: first, it's about fan favorites, voted on by its readers (via bracket-style), and second, it's about editors’ pick of the top innovation or discovery of 2020 in biomedical science.

To be eligible for inclusion in STAT Madness 2021, entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on January 18, 2021.

Member News: UUtah Receives APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity Designation
The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) awarded the University of Utah the Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation, which recognizes universities that promote growth, innovation and economic development in their regions.

(Reminder: the University of Utah Research Park will host AURP’s 2021 International Conference next October in Salt Lake City, UT. More details forthcoming!)

APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity designees work with public and private sector partners in their states and regions to support economic development through innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development and community development. Read more.
Industry News: BARDA Seeks Nonprofit
Partner for BARDA Ventures
BARDA, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), earlier this month announced a new type of public-private partnership, BARDA Ventures, that will realize authorities granted in the 21st Century Cures Act to utilize venture capital (VC) methods and practices.

This will be the first time HHS has utilized VC-oriented practices to make investments. As part of the new program, BARDA is soliciting proposals for an existing nonprofit partner to manage an investment fund that will support breakthrough technologies and create new approaches to enhance U.S. preparedness and response to 21st century health security threats, including COVID-19 and future pandemics. Member News: Julie Lenzer Appointed Vice- Chair with APLU Commission
Julie Lenzer, Chief Innovation Officer at the University of Maryland and AURP Board Member, has been named Vice-Chair for Economic Engagement with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities' (APLU) Commission on Economic and Community Engagement (CECE).

The CECE is facilitated by APLU’s Office of Economic Development and Community Engagement (OEDCE), both of which were established to lead and coordinate APLU's mission pillar of "expanding engagement." Learn more.
Industry News: LISC's Maurice Jones Considered for Cabinet Position
Maurice Jones, CEO and President of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and who kicked off our #AURPWEEK conference Day 5 auditorium session, is being considered for a cabinet position as secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development with the incoming Biden administration. Member News: Atlanta Zoning Board
Approves Expansion of GA Tech's TEP
Atlanta's Zoning Review Board has approved the re-zoning of nearly 20 acres of land around Georgia Tech’s Technology Enterprise Park (TEP). The 20-acre addition to the TEP would permit development of a $750 million biosciences and health innovation district with 2.2-million-square feet of new lab and research facilities, office space and apartments.

"The goal is to create a live-work-play innovation hub modeled after the university’s world-renowned Tech Square while adding 5,000 jobs to the rapidly expanding biosciences and life sciences fields," according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The Atlanta City Council is set to consider the project on Dec. 7. Learn more (subscription may be required).
CEO Corner: Brian Darmody Appears on Webinar Panel on Baltimore's Opportunity Zone
AURP CEO Brian Darmody participated as a panelist in a live webinar last month on "Transforming Baltimore's Opportunity Zones."

The webinar, hosted by Egils Milbergs with the Center for Accelerating Innovation, presented a comprehensive discussion aimed at helping project developers, investors, and stakeholders who are interested in revitalizing Baltimore’s Opportunity Zones. Watch here.
