East Alabama Health last month held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new medical facility in Auburn Research Park. Jim Weyhenmeyer, Auburn University's vice president for research and economic development, said the $33.7 million facility would provide faculty and students more opportunities to engage in biomedical research. "This is an opportunity to really think about how we might cross-pollinate between the university and this medical pavilion," he said. Learn more.
Furman University recently named Anthony Herrera as the university’s first chief innovation officer. In his new role, Herrera aims to create opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in entrepreneurial and innovative activities and drive the university’s innovation agenda. He will also continue to lead the Furman Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Furman I&E), which has built a strong foundation of relationships with public/private organizations and community leaders in Greenville and across South Carolina. The Oklahoma City Innovation District reports the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) is launching a new program in partnership with Langston University establishing an inaugural class of Langston Biomedical Research Scholars. Six undergraduate students from Oklahoma’s only historically Black college or university will work with OMRF scientists for eight weeks on research in cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, neurodegenerative conditions and autoimmune diseases as part of paid internships. Read more
The University of Arkansas's new Grady E. Harvell Civil Engineering Research and Education Center is almost completed and with plans for the 35,500-square-foot facility to open later this summer. This new center is located at the Arkansas Research and Technology Park (ARTP) and will allow advanced physical testing of civil engineering infrastructure and provide hands-on student training. The facility is the first phase in a project designed to develop the ARTP. The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded a $1.3 million grant to the city of Worcester, MA for infrastructure improvements to serve the Reactory Biotechnology Park and grow the region’s biotechnology, life sciences and research and development industries (plus foster economic growth). This EDA project, to be matched with $1.3 million in local funds, is expected to create 275 jobs and generate $110 million in private investment. Read more
Clark Nexsen has completed Fitts-Woolard Hall on Centennial Campus at NC State University in Raleigh, NC (home to #AURP President, Leah Burton, Director of Centennial Campus Partnership Office). The $150 million engineering building is the embodiment of Think and Do, the university’s mission statement connecting thought and action. As the architect and engineer, Clark Nexsen partnered with NC State to design the 225,000 square foot facility. Read more.

#AURP CEO Brian Darmody and BioHealth Innovation CEO Richard Bendis have authored a new report on "The “FASTER” Act for the Federal Laboratory System" with the The Day One Project. Brian and Richard write: "The federal lab system is an enormous, $50 billion-plus enterprise of internal research and development (R&D) across the United States. As governments around the world, including China, pour billions of dollars into advanced technologies, it is imperative that we use our nation’s federal lab ecosystem as effectively as possible."
