Oklahoma State University has announced the creation of a new institute - the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education (OAIRE) - aimed at supporting aerospace industry growth in Oklahoma and beyond. OAIRE, which will bring the state’s aerospace innovation economy together under one umbrella, will support ongoing and future partnerships between university, commercial, military and government agencies to help bring commercial enterprise and military sustainment support to the state. OAIRE's scope also will involve the Oklahoma City Innovation District plus conduct K-12 outreach programs focused on STEM connections, building the Oklahoma aerospace workforce pipeline and promoting community involvement. Wexford Science & Technology, a national innovation district developer that partners exclusively with universities, academic medical centers, and research institutions, is launching the Wexford Innovation Labs at 850 PBC, the firm’s newest development located in the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. Opening in mid-2022, the Wexford Innovation Labs will initially comprise 34,500 square feet of flexible lab, office, and lab support facilities specifically designed to meet the rigorous needs of growing life science companies. These flexible lab spaces are also paired with full-service amenities such as shared lab equipment; weekly networking and educational programming; and flexible terms. Read more.

Sylvan Source, a University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) client, is a winner of the world’s largest startup pitch contest, the Unicorn Battle Final Cup, held last month. Sylvan Source is part of an elite group of international startups from different industries that competed and won the preliminary Unicorn Battles. The best companies were selected during the preliminary Unicorn Battles® covering North America, Latin America, Silicon Valley, Asia, Middle East, Southeastern Asia & Oceania, Africa, Eastern & Western Europe this Spring. Sylvan Source was the only top three award-winner from the United States. The UACI is part of Tech Parks Arizona, which brings together university, industry and community, creating “interactive ground” to advance technology innovation. Read more.

the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has launched its STEM Talent Challenge to support programs to train science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) talent and fuel regional innovation economies across the nation. The $2 million STEM Talent Challenge will provide funding for work-and-learn programs to increase America’s STEM-capable workforce in emerging and transformative sectors such as space commerce, aeronautics, digital manufacturing, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity. Competition applicants may request up to $250,000 for implementation of a 24-month workforce program that complements their region’s innovation economy. The deadline to apply is Oct. 12, 2021. Climate scientists at NC State, home to the NC State Centennial Campus, are studying how climate change alters weather, sanitation and soil, and are working to include the voices of people of color and people in low-income communities who are most likely to be affected by climate change. This new research aims to ensure that groups facing the highest risks with a changing climate aren’t overlooked. “We understand climate change as a threat multiplier, in which these existing climate and non-climate stressors work and aggravate existing health disparities or social inequalities, pollution and health systems issues,” said Jennifer Runkle, an environmental epidemiologist at the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies.
