The University of Utah, which is set to host AURP's 2021 International Conference at the University of Utah Research Park (Oct. 18-21), has announced a $110 million gift to the university's School of Medicine from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and the Nora Eccles Treadwell Foundation. The gift will further accelerate the school’s ability to provide the highest quality medical education, advanced research and patient care, plus will enable the construction of a state-of-the-art new home for the School of Medicine on the health sciences campus. #AURP Members Perkins&Will and Wexford Science + Technology are both integrally involved in the master plan for phase II of Winston-Salem, NC's Innovation Quarter development. This new phase, centered around the Wake Forest School of Medicine, will feature 1 million square feet of clinical/office/lab space and 15 acres of green space. "Innovation Quarter has become one of the foremost examples of how to create a comprehensive sense of place that integrates university research, academics, entrepreneurial activity, corporate engagement, workforce development, and community inclusion," said Wexford's Thomas Osha. The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) recently announced funding for 10 new projects in technology, workforce development and their Global Health Fund initiative, from the Institute's Project Call 4.1, totaling roughly $4.6 million. The new projects selected help expand NIIMBL's portfolio in cell and gene therapy manufacturing plus vaccine stabilization through manufacturing technologies. Read more
AUTM's Barb Gunderson has issued a call for proposals for universities or a collaborative group of organizations to host an "Industry Partnering Forum meeting." Industry Partnering Forum meetings provide tech transfer professionals from industry and universities an opportunity to network in a particular tech sector and explore opportunities to form collaborations in areas such as IP licensing, research and related areas. Good news out of NC State, home of #AURP Member Centennial Campus. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is recognizing 10 NC State young faculty members with prestigious NSF Early-Career Development Program Awards. They are among approximately 450 grants given annually to scientists and engineers who have shown potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their organizations. The 10 award winners each have received significant grants spanning five years in their fields of study to support research and educational outreach. Read more
The University of Maryland, which hosts #AURP Member Discovery District, announced this week that it is making a major investment to obtain the most technologically advanced equipment on campus for a broad range of research areas, from neuroimaging to next-generation quantum materials. The investment of more than $10 million was made possible by the UMD Research Instrumentation Fund, launched in March and co-led by Interim Senior Vice President and Provost Ann G. Wylie and Vice President for Research Laurie E. Locascio, in partnership with President Darryll J. Pines. Read more.

Former AURP President, Rick Weddle, also is quoted: "Historically, there’s not much wet lab space available and [the issue] has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.” Read more.
