Wexford Science & Technology and the University of Pittsburgh recently marked the official opening of The Assembly, formerly the Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant, in a ribbon-cutting event. The iconic building, named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, was originally a one-stop shop for assembling and showcasing the Model T. This landmark of Pittsburgh’s legacy of manufacturing innovation will now serve as an epicenter of innovation in life sciences for Pitt researchers, entrepreneurs and established companies. The Spark Cleantech Accelerator (Spark CTA), a strategic initiative within the Spark Innovation Center at the University of Tennessee (UT) Research Park at Cherokee Farm, has selected the first six companies to participate in its inaugural program this summer. The accelerator, directed by John Bruck, Director of the Spark Innovation Center, and Carol Seamons, Director of Engagement for the Spark Innovation Center, will lead the companies through a comprehensive curriculum including customer discovery, product-market fit, financial modeling, organizational development and investor outreach. AURP CSO Brian Darmody has published a new column in Innovation America on "Another Federal Regional Cluster Funding Opportunity Emerges." In the column, Brian writes: "Sometime this September, the US Economic and Development Agency (EDA) will announce its Phase 2 awardees for the $1 billion Build Back Better Regional Challenge award winners . . . But as they say on late night TV: Wait, There’s More. The National Science Foundation (NSF) last week announced its own regional funding initiative: the NSF Regional Innovation Engines Program." AURP is On The Road: With the return of in-person events, AURP has hit the road spending time with its Members!
The SSTI 2022 Annual Conference (May 2-4) featured discussions on federal support for applied research and technology clusters with representatives from US EDA, NSF and US SBA. Representatives from AURP member institutions attending included University of Illinois, Kansas State, University of Cincinnati and Texas Tech.
The Tradeline Conference in Austin,TX on "Constructing University Research Facilities" (May 5-6) included discussion on building research parks and research facilities with representatives from Whiting Turner, Texas Tech, Children’s National Innovation Campus in Washington DC and Sandia National Lab.
The Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC (May 9-10) hosted a research conference at its House of Sweden on The Stockholm Model for an innovative city and included representatives from Swedish technology companies. Attendees included representatives from the University of Maryland, Purdue University, University of Illinois with discussion of building relationships between Swedish research parks and AURP.
