The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus is seeking RFI Proposals from interested consultants to advise and assist in the entitlement, development, disposition, and marketing of the UCSC MBEST site, previously knowns as the U.S. Army Fort Ord Base. UMBC, home to the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, recently announced President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III will retire at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year. President Hranbowski leaves office after 30 years of transformational leadership at UMBC. During President Hrabowski’s tenure, U.S. News & World Report ranked UMBC the nation’s #1 “Up and Coming” university for six years, 2009-14. In addition, during his tenure, the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park grew to hosting 131 companies and organizations, employing almost 1,900 people. UMBC’s research and development expenditures also grew over this time period to surpass $84 million annually. Read more
IonQ, the leading developer of quantum computing devices, and the University of Maryland (UMD) have announced a partnership to create the National Quantum Lab at UMD, or Q-Lab. The Q-Lab will be located in the UMD Discovery District, next to IonQ’s headquarters in College Park. It will be the nation’s first user facility that enables the scientific community to pursue world-leading research through hands-on access to a commercial-grade quantum computer. UMD-affiliated students, faculty, researchers, staff and partners across the country will have new opportunities to gain experience with IonQ’s industry-leading trapped-ion quantum computer hardware and collaborate with IonQ scientists and engineers. The US Economic Development Administration (EDA) has launched its $1 billion "Build Back Better Regional Challenge" that aims to provide a transformational investment to 20-30 regions across the country that want to revitalize their economies. 

Among the eligible entities that may apply include: a) institutions of higher education or a consortium of institutions of higher education and b) public or private non-profit organizations or associations acting in cooperation with officials of a political subdivision of a State. There are two distinct program phases with key deadlines to note:

  • Phase 1 deadline is October 19, 2021
  • Phase 2 deadline is March 15, 2022

McMaster University has been awarded $10 million from FedDev Ontario to support an integrated automotive, aerospace and advanced manufacturing network. Known as iHub, the state-of-the-art facility will expand the existing facilities at McMaster Innovation Park and will leverage another $16.8 million from industry partners including Ford, Honda, Bombardier, Stellantis (Fiat Chrysler) and MHI – RJ Aviation Group, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Five McMaster engineers – Ali Emadi, Saeid Habibi, Mark Lawford, Ravi Selvaganapathy and Stephen Veldhuis – are leading the initiative, designed to strengthen the capacity and capabilities of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt new technologies to better position themselves in an increasingly digital and electrified economy. Read more.

JD Supra's Scott Marty recently featured #AURP CEO Brian Darmody in a webinar on "The History and Growth of Research Institutions, with Special Guest Brian Darmody from the Association of University Research Parks." Brian discussed the history of research parks and the founding of AURP; the expansion of research institutions beyond the university space; and other industry and regional trends in research parks. In addition, AURP is an Event Partner for the virtual 7th Annual BioHealth Capital Region Forum (Sept. 13-14), and Brian is set to lead a panel (Sept. 13, 12:40pm ET) on "Federal Funding for Bio Research and Commercialization: What’s New and What’s on Tap." Read more.
