COI 101 Launch Point will serve as your launch point of discovery and offer up an overview of what you need to know, considerations for your research park or innovation district. Beginning in 2022, the COI 101 will be offered up online, in digestible modules that individuals can participate in, on their own schedule.

The US Economic Development Administration (EDA) has launched its $1 billion "Build Back Better Regional Challenge" that aims to provide a transformational investment to 20-30 regions across the country that want to revitalize their economies. 

Among the eligible entities that may apply include: a) institutions of higher education or a consortium of institutions of higher education and b) public or private non-profit organizations or associations acting in cooperation with officials of a political subdivision of a State. There are two distinct program phases with key deadlines to note:

  • Phase 1 deadline is October 19, 2021
  • Phase 2 deadline is March 15, 2022

Taylor R. Randall, PhD, has been named the 17th president of the University of Utah (the host university for AURP's 2021 International Conference, Oct. 18-21). Randall, who begins his new role on Aug. 9, succeeds Ruth V. Watkins, who served as president from April 2018-April 2021. Randall is currently dean of the David Eccles School of Business, a position he’s held since 2009. Earlier, Randall served as a professor of accounting. He has received awards for the best teacher in the MBA, Executive MBA and undergraduate programs as well as the Brady Superior Teaching Award. Under his guidance as faculty director, the University Venture Fund became the largest student-run venture fund in the country. He graduated from the University of Utah with honors in accounting and earned a MBA and PhD in operations and information management from the Wharton School. Read more.
Truck-Lite Co., LLC, a worldwide leader in LED lighting systems for commercial vehicles, is relocating its headquarters to Penn State Behrend’s Knowledge Park, where the company will have better access to engineering and technology talent as it prepares for the transportation industry’s shift to electric vehicles. Truck-Lite will lease nearly 30,000 square-feet from Penn State Behrend for its back-office operations. The college will invest in enhancements to its Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Center, which will contain Truck-Lite’s laboratory and test space. The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development is supporting the company’s move to Knowledge Park with a $270,000 grant. Read more.
A new round of accelerated development is slated for the University of New Mexico’s (UNM) Innovate ABQ high-tech research and development zone. UNM unveiled an updated master plan last month to reinvigorate the build-out of a 7-acre site at the corner of Albuquerque's Central and Broadway. The Innovate ABQ project is a multi-partner effort to transform the state's economy into an innovation economy. #AURP Member Perkins+Will, a development firm with expertise in Innovation Districts, first created a Development Framework in 2013 with input from the community and stakeholders. Perkins+Will has since refreshed its design to make Innovate ABQ an integral part of Downtown revitalization efforts. Read more.
Donald Thompson, Co-Founder and CEO of The Diversity Movement (and a presenter at AURP's IC20 last fall) has published a new White Paper on integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into your business from the ground up. His report aims to help position startups for better business outcomes and a competitive advantage through greater innovation, productivity and diversity of thought. The report, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as Culture Drivers, focuses on the business case for integrating DEI into your startup culture; advice from experts and fellow startup leaders; and steps to enact effective DEI on a budget. Scott Levitan, President & CEO of Research Triangle Park (plus AURP Board Member and Treasurer), has been selected among Triangle Business Journal latest class of CEO & C-Suite Awards winners. Scott Levitan was hired in August 2017 to lead the Research Triangle Foundation as its CEO & President. He has over 30 years of experience working in mixed-use development, with an emphasis on university-related research parks.Scott holds a master’s degree in urban design from Harvard University, a master’s in conservation studies from the University of York in York, England, and a bachelor’s in architecture from Louisiana State University. #AURP CEO Brian Darmody recently attended an in-person event in Philadelphia focused on an update on University City, "Philly's Hottest Neighborhood." Speaking at the event were Wexford's Pete Cramer and HDR's Elizabeth Mahon as moderator, both AURP members. Others AURP members and sponsors included CBRE, Skanska, Ballinger, U3 Advisors, SageGlass, and Greystar. The panel discussed the transformation of the University City Innovation District into a thriving enterprise, with more construction pending for lab spaces and housing at Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, Jefferson Hospital and other anchor research institutions in Philadelphia.
